Crime in Odisha / Temple Loot in Balipatna and Rising Thefts in Kalinga Vihar Ignite Public Outrage

Bhubaneswar, Jul 29: A major theft was reported on Tuesday at the famous Maa Giringeshwari temple in Athantara panchayat under Balipatna police station limits.

Miscreants broke open the temple gates and looted cash from the donation box along with brass items used in rituals, including lamp stands, buckets, and shields. They also broke into the temple’s kitchen, guest house, and rest house, stealing additional valuables.

The incident came to light when the temple priest arrived in the morning for rituals and found the locks broken. Trust members were immediately informed, and Balipatna police reached the spot to begin investigation.

Residents expressed frustration, noting that temples in the Balipatna area have repeatedly been targeted by thieves, while police have failed to apprehend the culprits. Locals have demanded stricter patrolling to prevent further incidents.

Meanwhile, Bhubaneswar’s Tamando police station area has also witnessed a spate of thefts and chain snatching incidents, particularly in Kalinga Vihar.

Residents report that thieves are taking advantage of early morning hours when families are away, breaking into homes and looting valuables.

On July 18, a theft was reported at the residence of Mamata Biswal, while another woman was attacked and her gold chain snatched while returning from yoga practice.

On July 27, another house was broken into, with goods worth lakhs stolen. Despite CCTV footage being available, police have yet to identify or arrest the accused.

The repeated incidents have created an atmosphere of fear in Kalinga Vihar, with residents alleging that lack of regular patrolling has emboldened criminals.

Public dissatisfaction with police performance is growing, as locals demand stronger security measures and visible action against the rising crime.
