Bhubaneswar, Aug 28: A dispute between two neighbouring couples over a minor issue allegedly escalated into a violent incident at Nanda Colony in Barilo area under Balipatna police station limits on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar in Odisha's Khordha district, a source said Friday.

According to the source, Jamuna Bhoi and her husband, hailing from  Dalit Sahi under Sarat Sasan village, were staying in a rented house. Another couple lived in a neighbouring rented house. The two families reportedly did not share a cordial relationship and frequently quarrelled over petty issues.

The situation allegedly turned violent late on August 23 when an argument broke out between the neighbours. When Jamuna and her husband objected, the neighbour allegedly rushed inside his house, returned carrying a sword and chased the couple, the source added.

Fearing for their lives, Jamuna and her husband reportedly ran into their house and locked the door from inside. The neighbour allegedly then attacked Jamuna's car, bearing registration number OD 02 DR 9XX8, with the sword before setting it on fire, the source informed.

The couple watched the incident through a window but could not come out as the accused was reportedly still wielding the sword, the source added.

Following a complaint at Balipatna police station, the cops have launched an investigation into the incident.
