Chandigarh, Aug 29: The shocking death of 28‑year‑old social media influencer Manjit Kaur has exposed a chilling tale of abduction, torture and suspected betrayal.

Manjit, who had over 1.46 lakh Instagram followers and was known for Punjabi‑Haryanvi reels and cosmetic product promotions, succumbed to burn injuries at PGI Chandigarh on August 26 after battling for 54 days.

According to her mother Kanta Devi’s complaint, Manjit was abducted on July 3 near a liquor shop in Sector 34, Chandigarh. The accused, identified as Shubhi and Pinda, allegedly forced her into a car after she refused their offer to drop her home.

She was taken to Morinda, tied to a tree in a forest and set ablaze. A passerby heard her cries, doused the flames with a blanket and rushed her to a local hospital. She was later shifted to Max Hospital, Mohali, and then referred to PGI on July 9.

Manjit remained unconscious for weeks. On August 5, after regaining consciousness, she narrated the ordeal to her family. Despite medical efforts, her condition deteriorated and she died on August 26. A post‑mortem was conducted at PGI before her body was handed over to relatives.

Police have registered an FIR under IPC sections 140(1) (abduction), 103(1) (murder) and 3(5) (common criminal liability). Chandigarh SSP Kanwardeep Kaur confirmed that a case of abduction and murder has been filed based on the mother’s complaint. Inspector Shadi Lal, in‑charge of Sector 34 police station, said investigations are ongoing.

Family members allege that Manjit had expressed her wish to record a statement after regaining consciousness, but no formal statement was taken. PGI police station had informed Kharar police, but officials claimed jurisdiction lay with Chandigarh. DSP Ishan Singla denied negligence, stating the incident fell under Chandigarh’s purview.

Police sources suggest one of the accused may have previously been in a live‑in relationship with Manjit. CCTV footage is being scanned, and investigators are examining her Instagram account, where disputes with other influencers and controversial videos have surfaced.

Manjit, who lived in Sunny Enclave, Mohali, was divorced and had a seven‑year‑old son. The hunt for the accused continues, with police raids underway.
