Bhubaneswar, Aug 7: The Commissionerate Police have arrested Rudra Prasad Sutar, the rape accused who escaped from the Mahila Police Station in Bhubaneswar while in police custody, a source said Friday.

Rudra Prasad Sutar was traced and arrested in Bengaluru by the Commissionerate Police. After being apprehended a day after his escape, he was produced before a local court and later brought back to Bhubaneswar by train. He is scheduled to be produced before a local court on Friday.

According to police, the accused had fled from the Mahila Police Station on July 31 by taking advantage of being served breakfast. He allegedly escaped on the pretext of having breakfast, prompting the registration of a case at the Capital Police Station.

Police had earlier brought Sutar to the Mahila Police Station after arresting him in connection with allegations of rape on the false promise of marriage.

Following the escape, Bhubaneswar Deputy Commissioner of Police Jagmohan Meena had suspended Assistant Sub-Inspector Tilottama Prusty, who was serving as the Duty Constable Officer (DCO), and the sentry on duty after a preliminary inquiry found negligence on their part.

According to the source, ASI Prusty had briefly gone to the bathroom while the sentry was serving breakfast to the accused. Rudra allegedly pushed the sentry aside and fled from the police station before escaping the area.

An FIR was subsequently registered at the Capital Police Station, and a manhunt was launched, leading to his arrest in Bengaluru. Police are continuing further legal proceedings in the case.
