Sambalpur, Jun 8: A shocking double murder in Giripali village under Sason Police Station limits in Sambalpur district has left residents stunned after a woman and her daughter were allegedly hacked to death while sleeping in their courtyard, reportedly in the presence of the daughter’s 4-year-old child.
The deceased were identified as Urkuli Patra and her daughter Nilima Joda. Police detained a 22-year-old neighbour, Ajay Pradhan, in connection with the killings and are questioning him to ascertain the motive behind the crime.
Mother, Daughter Killed While Sleeping
According to a source, Urkuli Patra, her daughter Nilima and Nilima's 4-year-old daughter Amrita were sleeping on cots in the courtyard of their house late on Sunday night.
Police suspect that the accused entered the premises during the night and attacked the victims with a sharp weapon. Urkuli and Nilima sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene.
The child escaped unharmed, the source informed.
Child Narrates Night Of Horror
The 4-year-old Amrita reportedly told family members and police that two men came into the courtyard and assaulted her mother and grandmother.
According to Amrita, she woke up after hearing her mother scream and began crying. She claimed the attackers also attempted to strike her but failed to reach her.
The child further alleged that the assailants repeatedly attacked the faces of her mother and grandmother before fleeing.
Accused Called Police After Incident
Meanwhile, police said the accused called them after the incident and informed them about the crime.
The weapon suspected to have been used in the killings has been seized by the police.

Scientific Team Joins Probe
Police, along with a scientific team, reached the spot and carried out an extensive investigation. Both bodies were seized and sent to Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research in Burla for post-mortem examination.
Speaking on the incident, Additional SP Srimanta Barik said police are examining all angles and collecting evidence from the crime scene.
Motive Yet To Be Established
Although a suspect has been detained, investigators have not yet disclosed the motive behind the brutal killings.
Police said further interrogation of the accused and forensic examination of evidence are expected to provide clarity on the circumstances that led to the double murder.
