Bhubaneswar, May 7: Outskirts of the State capital stood shaken, when a mob thrashed a youth
to death, reminiscing of the mob lynching cases, which has gained currency in the crime scenario across the country. The grave incident is reported to have taken place over Ramchandrapur Bridge under Balianta police limits. According to reports, two youths allegedly misbehaved with two women while crossing the bridge. The alleged act of eve-teasing sparked outrage among locals, and they attacked the youths.

As per the eyewitnesses, the enraged crowd tied the hands and legs of the accused before subjecting them to a merciless defeating in full view of the police. The hit was so severe that one of the youths succumbed to his injuries on the spot. The other was rescued and taken into custody by Balianta police for interrogation.

The incident of mob attack, even in the garb of mob justice, has raised serious questions about law and order, as well as the role of police officials who were present during the assault but failed to prevent the mob from taking the law into their own hands.

While locals justified their actions as a response to the alleged harassment of women, legal experts have condemned the violence, stressing that justice must be delivered through proper legal channels. This shocking episode again flags the perils of ‘mob justice’ and ‘mob policing’ that carry no legal sanctions.

Legal experts called for the urgent need for stronger policing measures to prevent such breakdowns in law and order. Police are expected to investigate both the allegations of misbehavior and the circumstances that led to the fatal attack on youth.
