Brothers' Dispute Over Father's Compensation Turns Fatal

Baripada, Aug 29: A 32-year-old man allegedly killed his younger brother with an iron pipe during a dispute over compensation money in Jyotipur village under Baripada Sadar police station limits in Mayurbhanj district, a source said on Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Birakishore Mahanta, 23, while his elder brother and accused, Rajkishore Mahanta, 32, was arrested by Baripada Sadar police.

According to the source, the brothers had been involved in frequent disputes over the Rs 6 lakh compensation received by their family after their father, Mahendra Mahanta, died of an electric shock a few days ago.

The dispute allegedly escalated on Friday when Birakishore asked his elder brother for money to buy a motorcycle. An argument broke out between the two, followed by a physical altercation, the source added.

In a fit of anger, Rajkishore allegedly picked up an iron pipe and struck Birakishore on the head. He sustained serious injuries and died at the spot, the source said.

Baripada Sadar police registered a murder case under Case No. 216 dated August 28, 2026, under BNS Section 103(1) and arrested Rajkishore.

Baripada Sadar police station IIC Sasmita Mahanta said further investigation into the incident is underway.

Dhenkanal Man Arrested For Killing Wife
In a separate incident, a family dispute turned fatal in Indupur village under Sadar police station in Dhenkanal district, where a man allegedly killed his wife and buried her body in a pit behind their house.

The deceased was identified as Kaushalya Pradhan. According to information, her husband, Girish Pradhan, allegedly asked her for money to buy alcohol. When she refused, an argument broke out between the couple.

The dispute escalated, with Girish assaulting Kaushalya. She subsequently died, following which he buried her body in a pit behind the house, the source added.

Acting on a complaint from villagers, Sadar police reached the spot along with a scientific team and launched an investigation. Police arrested Girish in connection with the alleged murder.

Girish has three sons and a young daughter.
