Marriage Dispute and Money Trail: Fresh Twist in Sudhir Patra Murder
Police present accused in Sudhir Patra murder case

Key Points

A fresh twist emerges in the Sudhir Patra abduction and murder case. Investigators say a family dispute over a marriage proposal, alongside financial motives, played a role.
Berhampur, Apr 24: A fresh twist emerges in the Sudhir Patra abduction and murder case, under Gopalpur police limit. Investigators say a family dispute over a marriage proposal, alongside financial motives, played a role. Sudhir’s niece, Nibedita Patra, wanted to marry Kalu Charan Pradhan, but Sudhir opposed the proposal, insisting on arranging a “better match.”
Reports suggest Nibedita and her lover were involved in the conspiracy that led to the crime.

It is noteworthy that, the murder of plot dealer Sudhir Patra from Satyanarayanpur under Gopalpur police station has shocked the community after police revealed that the main conspirators were his own niece Nibedita Patra and nephew Tushar Patra. The revelation has left Sudhir’s family devastated, as he had raised both of them like his own children, nurturing them from a young age and sharing his earnings with them. Relatives expressed disbelief that those he trusted most could betray him in such a brutal manner.

Police have arrested nine people in connection with the murder, including Nibedita and Tushar. According to investigators, the duo played a central role in planning the crime. For Sudhir’s family, the news was heartbreaking. “He treated them like his own son and daughter, gave them everything, and yet they took his life,” said Bansidhar Padhy, Sudhir’s elder brother, demanding that both be sentenced to death.

Relatives and locals have also raised serious questions about the police investigation. Sudhir was abducted on April 15 and later killed, but despite deploying eight teams, police failed to trace him alive. His decomposed body was recovered from Sorada on April 22. Shockingly, the very next day police presented nine accused at a press conference. Family members questioned how suspects could be arrested within a day of the body’s recovery. “Were they already in custody? If so, why wasn’t Sudhir rescued alive?” asked Pradeep Panigrahi, a relative.

Locals pointed out several lapses, including the failure of police patrols and checkpoints during the abduction and subsequent movements of the accused. Reports suggest the kidnappers changed vehicles, purchased liquor, tortured Sudhir, and even made audio-video calls while moving across 200 kilometers, yet police teams failed to intercept them. Friends like Krushnachandra Pattnayak and Chandrasekhar Panigrahi also criticized the handling of the case, demanding accountability.

Police sources confirmed that a Test Identification Parade (TIP) will soon be conducted at Berhampur jail, where Sudhir’s family will identify the accused, including Nibedita and Tushar. Five of the nine accused are expected to be taken on remand for further interrogation.

For Sudhir’s family, the pain is compounded by betrayal from within. As they mourn his loss, they continue to demand justice, calling for the harshest punishment for those responsible, including the niece and nephew he once cherished.
