Bhubaneswar, Jul 28: In a shocking incident, a man allegedly killed his 26-year-old wife before attempting to end his own life by consuming poison over suspected marital discord in the Mancheswar police station limits of Bhubaneswar on Monday.

According to police, the deceased was identified as Monika Jena, a native of Baunsapada village under Itamati Police Station area in Nayagarh district. Monika had married accused Deepak Kumar Jena of Ranpur area of the same district in 2019. The couple has a six-year-old child.

Biswaranjan Senapati, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Zone-V), said the couple often fought after marriage over different issues. He added that owing to frequent disputes, they had been living separately for the past two years, with cases registered at different police stations over domestic violence and other charges.

Deepak worked in Chennai and other places outside Odisha, while Monika stayed with her mother and elder sister in Bhubaneswar. The accused, who had recently returned to Odisha, allegedly took away their son around two months ago.

The deceased, along with her mother and sister, shifted to a rental accommodation in Chakeisiani under Mancheswar police station limits around 15 days ago to avoid being tracked by the accused.

Citing the statement of Monika’s elder sister, ACP Senapati said Deepak had been looking for her and eventually traced the house in Chakeisiani. On Monday afternoon, when Monika was alone at home, Deepak allegedly entered and attacked her.

The Commissionerate Police said the accused murdered Monika by throttling her with a towel and later slashed the veins of her left wrist. Her family returned home to find her dead and informed the police, who reached the crime scene immediately.

The accused was subsequently nabbed from a nearby place after police tracked his mobile phone. A pouch containing poison was recovered from his possession, and he admitted to having consumed it.

“After committing the murder, the husband consumed poison. He was immediately taken to Hi-Tech Hospital. He is undergoing treatment, and after his release, he will be arrested and forwarded to court,” the Commissionerate Police said.
