Brahmapur, Aug 24: A woman was allegedly killed by her husband at Nahada village under Gangapur police station limits in Ganjam district, a source said on Monday.

The deceased was identified as Minati Pradhan. Police detained her husband, Sujit Biswal, for questioning and are investigating the incident.

Couple Had Married In 2016
According to the source, Minati and Sujit were in a relationship and had eloped to Surat in 2015 when Minati was a minor. Following a complaint from Minati's family, Gangapur police rescued her from Surat and handed her over to her family.

After Minati turned 18 in 2016, the couple married in a court in Bhanjanagar with the consent of both families. Sujit later returned to Surat, where he was convicted in a murder case and served an eight-year prison sentence, according to Minati’s father, Rohit Pradhan.

Family Alleges Repeated Harassment
According to the family, after his release on bail, Sujit repeatedly visited Minati’s parental home and allegedly subjected her to physical and mental harassment.

Family members alleged that Minati was alone at home on Sunday afternoon when Sujit entered the house, locked both doors and attacked her with knives. She sustained fatal injuries to her neck and died inside the house.

Neighbours heard screams and informed Minati’s father, who returned home and alerted Gangapur police, the source added.

Father Alleges Threat With Knife
Minati's father Rohit Pradhan said that when he reached home, he found both entrances locked. He said he knocked on the doors, but Sujit initially did not open them.

According to Rohit, the suspect's younger brother Ajit then insisted that Sujit open the door. Sujit allegedly opened it while holding a knife and threatened Rohit, following which he alerted the police.

“After returning from Surat, he repeatedly tortured my daughter at our home. Two months ago, when I complained to his family about the repeated harassment and torture, his elder brother Balaram assured me that he would control Sujit,” Rohit said.

Police Probe Underway
Police reached the spot, opened the house and found Minati’s body inside. The body was seized for further investigation.

A scientific team also visited the crime scene as part of the investigation.

Police were questioning Sujit to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged killing at the time of filing this report.
