Bhubaneswar, May 10: The brutal mob lynching of GRP constable Soumya Ranjan Swain in Balianta has shaken Odisha, prompting swift action from the Crime Branch.

A case has been registered, and a special three-member investigation team has been formed under the leadership of DSP Ratnaprabha Satapathy. The team includes one inspector and one sub-inspector, while a Crime Branch SP will oversee monitoring. On Sunday, the team visited Balianta police station and later inspected the crime scene.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, visibly disturbed by the incident, reviewed the state’s law and order situation on Saturday.

He directed the Crime Branch to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation and instructed the DGP to ensure such incidents are never repeated. The CM emphasized strict enforcement of law and ordered strong action against those responsible.

So far, 11 arrests have been made in connection with the killing. While five suspects were initially detained, police arrested six more on Saturday. Authorities believe the number of arrests may rise as CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts are analyzed.

Balianta police continue raids in multiple locations to track down other accused individuals.

According to DCP sources, two separate FIRs have been lodged at Balianta police station — one by the victim’s father and another by a young woman who alleged misconduct. Investigators are scrutinizing video evidence to identify those directly involved in the assault.

Meanwhile, Commissionerate Police are probing Soumya’s activities at a gym in Satyabihar, where he was reportedly present on the day of the incident. CCTV footage from the gym and statements from staff are being examined to piece together his movements before the attack.

The Chief Minister has assured that justice will be delivered and that the police will take the strictest possible measures to uphold law and order.
