Balangir, Aug 28: Police busted an alleged seven-member gang accused of carrying out thefts and robberies at the famous Duarsini Temple and a businessman’s house in the Sindhekela police station area of Balangir district, recovering jewellery worth around Rs 3 crore, a source said Friday.
Police recovered around 2 kg of gold and 25 kg of silver ornaments during raids at the accused persons’ houses in villages along the Balangir-Kalahandi-Rayagada border.
Gang Conducted Reconnaissance
According to the source, the accused travelled from their villages to urban areas and initially conducted reconnaissance of temple donation boxes and businessmen’s houses.
They allegedly returned later to carry out thefts or robberies after identifying an opportunity, the source added.
Police recovered around 2 kg of gold and 25 kg of silver ornaments during raids at the accused persons’ houses in villages along the Balangir-Kalahandi-Rayagada border.

Following the alleged crimes, the gang members reportedly took the stolen jewellery to their villages and concealed it at different locations to avoid detection.
Jewellery Found In Hidden Locations
During the raids, police recovered jewellery buried underground, concealed inside walls and kept in the storage compartment of a motorcycle.
Some ornaments were also reportedly found inside a sound box at one of the houses.
Police arrested seven alleged gang members, including those identified as the alleged kingpins, Iswar Nayak and Trilochan Bagh. A Mahindra Bolero allegedly used in the crimes was also seized.

The arrests followed a series of theft cases, including the alleged theft at Duarsini Temple and a subsequent burglary at a businessman’s house in the Sindhekela area.

Police registered around three cases and formed five teams to investigate the incidents.
After receiving information that the accused were from Kalahandi and Rayagada districts, police conducted raids at Panasguda and Kharajoda villages.
During the searches, officers dug up portions of the ground and broke open walls to recover the allegedly stolen ornaments.
Jewellery To Be Returned After Verification
Balangir SP Abilash G said the recovered jewellery would be identified and handed over to its rightful owners after verification.
The investigation into the alleged thefts and robberies is continuing.
