Yashasvi Jaiswal continued his good showing in the series with an unbeaten fifty, but off-spinner Shoaib Bashir’s triple strike gave a late boost to England in the second session on day two of the fourth Test at the JSCA International Stadium on Saturday.

Ranchi, Feb 24: Yashasvi Jaiswal continued his good showing in the series with an unbeaten fifty, but off-spinner Shoaib Bashir’s triple strike gave a late boost to England in the second session on day two of the fourth Test at the JSCA International Stadium on Saturday.

At tea, India are 131/4 in 38 overs and trail England by 222 runs, with Jaiswal unbeaten on 54 while Sarfaraz Khan is not out on one. It was a session where India were comfortably placed at 86/1, but slipped to 130/4, as Bashir made the most out of pitch assisting spinners to take 3-32.

The session began with Shubman Gill effortlessly driving Bashir through extra cover for four, followed by flicking and driving off James Anderson for a brace of boundaries. Jaiswal continued his solid show by lofting Bashir over long-on for six and had a narrow escape when Ollie Robinson extracted an outside edge, which was dying on keeper Ben Foakes.

Foakes felt he cleanly took the catch, but replays showed the ball bouncing before going into the gloves. Gill brought his fast hands into play by cracking a cut and guiding off Ollie Robinson for back-to-back fours, before being trapped lbw by Bashir via a delivery which turned sharply to beat the inside edge.

Gill went for a review, but replays showed ball hitting stumps, bringing an end to his 82-run partnership with Jaiswal, who got his fourth fifty plus score of the series with a single off Tom Hartley.

Rajat Patidar impressed with his dabs, flicks and punches to collect four boundaries quickly, but fell to Bashir after being trapped lbw by the one which skidded on from outside off. The DRS showed ball hitting leg-stump, with the impact on umpire’s call, meaning Patidar’s stay ended at 17.

Ravindra Jadeja smashed back-to-back leg-side sixes off Hartley after surviving an lbw review on the previous delivery. But Bashir bowled a top-spinner from the good length and had some extra bounce to catch Jadeja's inside edge and the ball lobbed to Ollie Pope at short leg, giving him his third wicket. India will rely heavily on Jaiswal and Sarfaraz to bail them out of trouble.

Brief Scores: England 353 in 104.5 overs (Joe Root 122 not out, Ollie Robinson 58; Ravindra Jadeja 4-67, Akash Deep 3-83) lead India 131/4 in 38 overs (Yashasvi Jaiswal 54 not out; Shoaib Bashir 3-32) by 222 runs.

UP: 1 killed, 15 Injured After School Pickup Van Rams Into Parked Truck In Ballia

Ballia, July 27: A school student was killed and at least 15 others sustained injuries after the driver of a pickup van carrying school children lost control of the vehicle and hit a parked truck early on Saturday morning.

District Magistrate, Ballia, Praveen Kumar Lakshyakar shared information on the incident and said, "A pick-up van of school children lost control and hit a parked truck, killing one and injuring other 15 students early this morning near Kapuri Narayanpur under the Fefna police station area in Ballia district."

"The injured are being treated at the district hospital. The condition of three to four students remains critical.

The District Magistrate said that the tragic incident took place on Saturday morning when the students were leaving for school in a pickup van that suddenly went out of control and rammed into a parked truck.

Adding further, the DM said, "A child was brought in brain dead at the hospital. Three to four children are critical, out of them we have referred two to Varanasi and the rest have been kept here in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Critical Care Unit, all the doctors' team is providing treatment."

An investigation into the matter is underway.

Foreign Portfolio Investments Drop To Rs 2,916 Cr On Back Of High Valuations, Capital Gain Tax Hike

New Delhi, July 27: Net investments by Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) in the Indian equity market declined to Rs 2,916 crore for the week ending July 26, due to investor selling amid budget uncertainty.

As per data from the National Securities Depository Limited, last week foreign investors injected Rs 15,420 crore into Indian markets, but their buying declined significantly for the week July 22-26.

So far in July, the net investment by FPIs in the equity market stands at Rs 33,688 crore. This year's total investment by foreign investors has now surged to Rs 1,39,010 crore.

"The Budget 2024-25 has not sparked any significant excitement in the market, while it was both populist and prudent. The increase in short- and long-term capital gains taxes added to the volatility on budget day. Although the government's emphasis on fiscal discipline and growth is appealing, FIIs are cautious due to current high valuations and muted expectations for Q1FY25 results" said Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services.

He further added, "Meanwhile, DIIs continue to employ a 'buy on dips' strategy, which contributed to market gains on the week's last trading day, particularly in the pharma, auto, metal, IT, and FMCG sectors."

The volatility of FPI flows extends beyond India, affecting other markets as well. Countries like Brazil, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, and South Korea have witnessed FPI inflows this week while the markets in Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam have experienced outflows.

"Market focus has swiftly moved on from the Union Budget, unveiled in the week, to the ongoing Q1FY25 earnings season. The FY2025 Union Budget delivered a judicious balance between capital expenditure, fiscal prudence, and welfarism. FPI flows are expected to remain volatile" said Shrikant Chouhan, Head of Equity Research, Kotak Securities.

This year's trend in foreign investment has been erratic. Foreign investors were net sellers in January, April, and May, cumulatively selling equities worth around Rs 60,000 crore. However, they turned into net buyers in February, March, and June, with cumulative purchases amounting to Rs 63,200 crore.
