MLA From Ranpur, Surama Padhy, was Thursday unanimously elected as the Speaker of the 17th Odisha Legislative Assembly. A special session of the Assembly was convened for the purpose.

Bhubaneswar, June 20: MLA From Ranpur, Surama Padhi, was Thursday unanimously elected as the Speaker of the 17th Odisha Legislative Assembly. A special session of the Assembly was convened for the purpose.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi placed a proposal for the unanimous selection of Surama Padhy as the Speaker. Deputy Chief Minister KV Singh Deo seconded the proposal. Then Pro-TM Speaker declared Padhy as the Speaker of the House.

“I declare that Smt Surama Padhy is duly chosen as the Speaker of the House,” Pro-Tem Speaker Swain announced and congratulated Padhy.

CM Majhi, Deputy CMs Singh Deo and Pravati Parida, Ministers, Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik and Members of all parties accompanied Padhy to the Speaker's Seat. They all congratulated Padhy on being elected as Speaker.

Following her appointment, Speaker Padhy was given a guard of honour outside the House.

Riteish-Starrer 'Pill' Trailer Drops; Actor Plays Man Out To Expose Dark Side Of Pharma Industry

Mumbai, June 27: The makers of Riteish Deshmukh's debut series 'Pill', which is based on the pharmaceutical industry, unveiled the trailer Thursday. The actor described being part of the journey as enlightening.

The over-one-minute-long trailer begins with an introduction to Riteish’s character, Prakash Chauhan, who does everything in his power to delve into the Indian pharmaceutical world.

It showcases the process through which a pill reaches an individual, involving powerful pharmaceutical industrialists, corrupt doctors, medical representatives, compromised drug regulators, politicians, journalists, and whistleblowers.

Talking about his debut series, Riteish said: “It’s exciting to venture into the world of digital streaming. When you're entrusted with a compelling story like 'Pill', there's a huge responsibility to do justice to it.”

The actor said it is intriguing to learn about the complexities behind something as seemingly simple as a pill that impacts the daily lives and well-being of people.

Riteish added: “Being a part of this journey has been incredibly enlightening. Working alongside visionaries like Raj Kumar Gupta and Ronnie Screwvala, who have poured their hearts into this project, is a true honour."

"Prakash Chauhan is a character of both simplicity and strength, and I am confident that his fight against the corrupt pharma players will resonate with the audience,” he added.

The trailer then shows how a pill circulating in the market has negative repercussions after consumption. However, Prakash faces off against the manipulative CEO of the company, portrayed by Pavan Malhotra, taking on a firm fight to uncover the truth.

Producer Ronnie Screwvala shared: "With 'Pill', we aim to entertain as well as increase awareness among people. Riteish brings his unparalleled acting prowess to the series, making his digital debut even more exciting. And as always, it is a pleasure working with Raj, who has helmed this one with his thrilling expertise.”

Creator Raj Kumar Gupta said that celluloid has always been his medium of expression, as he has made films across genres to bring different stories.

"A story like 'Pill' needed to be told through a longer format," said the director, who has previously made films such as 'No One Killed Jessica' and 'Raid'.

Budget Will See Many 'Historic Steps' Towards Making India The 3rd Largest Economy: President Murmu

New Delhi, June 27: President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday said the upcoming Union Budget will be an effective document of the government's far-reaching policies and futuristic vision.

Along with major economic and social decisions, many historic steps will also be seen in this budget, President Murmu said during her address to the Parliament.

"The pace of reforms will be further accelerated in tune with the aspirations of people of India for rapid development. My Government believes that there should be healthy competition among the states to attract investors from all over the world," the President mentioned.

In 10 years, India has risen to become the fifth largest economy from the 11th ranked one, she said.

President Murmu said that from 2021 to 2024, India has grown at an average rate of 8 per cent annually.

"And this growth has not been achieved under usual circumstances. In recent years, we have seen the biggest pandemic in 100 years. India has achieved this growth amid the global pandemic and despite ongoing conflicts in different parts of the world," the President told the Parliament.

Today, India alone is contributing 15 per cent of the global growth, she said.

"Now, my government is striving to make India the third largest economy in the world. Achieving this goal will also strengthen the foundation of a developed India," President Murmu noted. (IANS)

New Delhi, June 27: After South Africa's thumping nine-wicket win over Afghanistan in the first semi-final, the focus shifts to the second semifinal of the T20 World Cup between India and England at the Providence Stadium in Guyana on Thursday.

The Rohit Sharma-led side is eyeing their first T20 World Cup final since 2014 after beating Australia in their last Super Eight clash on Monday. In the last edition's semi-final, India faced a crushing 10-wicket loss to eventual champions England in Adelaide.

Meanwhile, the weather in Guyana is likely to play a spoilsport in the crucial match. According to Guyana's weather prediction for Thursday, "thunder showers changing to heavy showers by late morning" is expected with a 60 per cent chance of rain predicted.

What will happen if the India vs England semifinal is washed out?

The India vs England semi-final clash does not have a reserve day but has been granted an additional 250 minutes time to complete the fixture beyond the usual cut-off period.

For the semi-finals and final, a minimum of 10 overs have to be bowled in each innings to constitute a match. Failing to play 10 overs each, the team finishing at the top of their Super Eight group advances to the final which means India will progress to the finals.

If there is a tie, and weather conditions prevent the Super Over from being completed, or if the match is abandoned due to weather or for whatever reason the game is a no result, then the team that finished first in its Second Round Group (Super 8) will progress to the Final.
