The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Odisha Police has busted a racket involved in the misappropriation of funds worth crores of rupees deposited in the banks through cloned cheques, an official said on Monday.

Bhubaneswar, Apr 30: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Odisha Police has busted a racket involved in the misappropriation of funds worth crores of rupees deposited in the banks through cloned cheques, an official said on Monday.

A member of the gang was arrested from Balaghat area of Madhya Pradesh on April 26. The accused was identified as Pomesh Tembhare of Kirnapur in Balaghat district. Tembhare, brought to Odisha on transit remand following a local court's order at Balaghat, was produced before the OPID court, Balasore on Monday.

The EOW busted the racket while investigating a case registered on the allegations of Sujata Kanungo, Chief Manager, Bank of India's Baripada branch in Mayurbhanj district.

Kanungo complained about illegal transactions of Rs 9,56,76,600 from the account of District Mineral Foundation Trust of Zilla Parishad, Mayurbhanj maintained through the production of four cheques on April 10 and 18.

"During the investigation, it was learnt that the fraudsters, by producing forged or cloned cheques, managed to transfer Rs 9,56,76,600 to two different accounts in the name of PT Constructions & Supplier maintained with Bank of Maharashtra and SK Enterprises maintained with Punjab & Sind Bank. It was also found that the amount was further diverted to many other accounts from the accounts of PT Constructions & Supplier and S K Enterprises," an EOW source said.

The police also ascertained that more than Rs 2.68 crore out of the total Rs 9.56 crore has been transferred to the account of PT Constructions & Suppliers, the firm owned by Tembhare.

The Raipur-based firm is a sham one and created only for the fraud.

EOW team with the help of local police and CAPF nabbed the accused from his hideout in the Maoist-hit village of Balaghat.

"The accused is a member of a larger gang having complex network in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Odisha. They have been doing these scams for at least 4 years. They have been doing it through well planned and meticulous methods from cheque cloning to multi-layering of money transfers, creation and operations of multiple mule bank accounts, withdrawal of money, information network, local touts etc.," added the EOW source.

The police have reportedly blocked Rs 5,04,06,900 and frozen Rs 13,56,948 deposited in 33 accounts out of the total amount withdrawn illegally.

PM Modi To Address Women In Varanasi Today

Varanasi, May 21: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will interact with 25,000 women at Kashi's Sampurnanand Sanskrit University ground on Tuesday.

He will address an election rally in Prayagraj too.

Kashi region BJP Spokesperson Navaratan Rathi said: "There are 1,909 booths in Varanasi Lok Sabha and 10 women from each booth have been invited for Prime Minister Modi's interaction with women. All preparations for the event have been completed."

Doctors, engineers, lawyers, professors, chartered accountants, and teachers have also been invited to the programme that will start around 4 p.m. on Tuesday, he added.

BJP's state unit secretary and Mahila Morcha in-charge Archana Mishra said: "Our enthusiastic participation at his Kashi roadshow on May 13 made the Prime Minister very happy and that is why he is coming here again to share his happiness with us."

She said BJP's women wing members have gone door-to-door in Varanasi to invite women for the Tuesday event.

Lok Sabha coordinator and MLC Ashwini Tyagi said: "Prime Minister has done many things for the upliftment of women during his 10 years in office. It was because of him that 33 per cent reservation to women in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies under the Nari Shakti Vandan Act could become possible."

After the event, Prime Minister Modi will spend the night at the BLW guest house in Varanasi.

The Prime Minister will address a meeting at the Government Polytechnic Ground on Wednesday (May 22), said Basti Superintendent of Police, Gopal Krishna Chowdhury.

He said that members of SPG security had already reached Basti and inspected the rally venue and added that no flying zone had been declared in nearby areas.

He said from May 20 to May 22, flying drones or balloons in the region have been banned due to security reasons.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Union Minister Anupriya Patel, too, would share the stage with Prime Minister Modi.

SFI Announces Fifth Edition Of Indian Open Surfing From May 31

Mangalore, May 21: The Surfing Federation of India (SFI), the governing body for the sports of surfing and stand-up paddling in the country, announced the schedule for the fifth edition of the Indian Open Surfing (IOS). Recognised by the International Surfing Association, this premier surfing competition will be hosted by the Mantra Surf Club at the tranquil Sasihithlu Beach in Mangalore, Karnataka, from May 31 to June 2.

The three-day surfing competition will feature participation from all the top-ranked surfers in India. The Karnataka government has extended its support to the event for the fifth time in a row. The competition will include four categories: men’s open, women’s open, groms (U-16) boys, and groms (U-16) girls.

IOS will be the second stop of the national championship series of the 2024 calendar year, following the International Surfing Festival Kerala 2024, held in March at the beautiful cliff beach of Varkala.

The IOS will feature intense rivalry between surfers from the east and west coasts, as these championships carry important ranking points that will determine the surfers' standings at the end of the season.

“We are happy to extend our support to the organisers of the Indian Open of Surfing - Surfing Swami Foundation and Mantra Surf Club under the aegis of the Surfing Federation of India. They are doing a fabulous job of promoting the lesser-explored coasts of our state and boosting our tourism economy”, said Mullai Muhilan, deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada.

"Hosting a national-level competition in such a beautiful and serene part of the state can attract more visitors from different parts of the country," he said.

Arun Vasu, president of the Surfing Federation of India, on the announcement said, “Our goal is simple, we want to elevate India to the top in surfing. After a successful start to the National Series in Kerala, we are glad to continue the championships in Mangaluru before the championship tour moves to the East Coast”.

Ramesh Budihal, Harish M, Srikanth D, and Manikandan M will be the surfers to watch in the men’s category, having performed exceptionally well in the last national championship recently held in Kerala. In the women’s category, Kamali Moorthy, Srishthi Selvam, and Sandhya Arun are among the participants competing for the top honours. Teenage sensation Kishore Kumar will have all eyes on him, having stunned everyone with his recent performances.

Rammohan Paranjape, vice president SFI and Director of Mantra Surf Club, said, "We are hoping for a really good turnout of all top surfers in the country and a very close competitive battle between the best, the last two editions of IOS have produced the best action with close finishes at the end, let’s hope for a solid swell and great weather."

In the first championship of the calendar year (International Surfing Festival, Kerala), Ramesh Budihal and Kamali P emerged victorious in the men’s and women’s Open categories, respectively while Kishore Kumar won the groms 16 and under boys with a high score of 14.73
