Vice President of India and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar on Thursday administered oaths to 14 newly elected members of the esteemed Upper House of Parliament, comprising Congress leader Sonia Gandhi.

New Delhi, April 4: Vice President of India and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar on Thursday administered oaths to 14 newly elected members of the esteemed Upper House of Parliament, comprising Congress leader Sonia Gandhi.

Sonia Gandhi took the oath as Rajya Sabha MP for the first time from Rajasthan, filling the seat that will fall vacant after former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh completed his tenure on April 3.
This came a few days before the ensuing Lok Sabha elections that are scheduled to take place in seven phases, starting from April 19.

She took oath in the presence of Leader of the House Piyush Goyal and Leader of Opposition, Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge. Her daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh, and secretary general P C Mody were also present.

Sonia Gandhi had earlier been a member of the Lok Sabha having represented Rae Bareli in 2004, 2009, 2014 and 2019. This time around she chose to be elected from the upper house due to her health.

In the halls of the Parliament House, the momentous occasion unfolded with Dhankhar presiding over the solemn ceremony of administering the oath to these newly elected Rajya Sabha members.

Amidst an atmosphere charged with anticipation and dignity, a distinguished roster of individuals stepped forward to pledge their commitment to serve the nation with integrity and dedication.

Among those who were administered the oath were Golla Baburao, Meda Raghunadha Reddy, Yerram Venkata Subba Reddy, Sanjay Kumar Jha, Syed Naseer Hussain and Ajay Makan.

Amidst the array of new faces, seasoned politicians such as Madan Rathore, Ravi Chandra Vaddiraju, and Kunwar Ratanjeet Pratap Narayan Singh imparted a sense of continuity and experience to the proceedings.
Notable among them was Ashwini Vaishnaw, who currently holds the Railways and the IT Portfolio in the government. Vaishnaw was elected to the upper house from Odisha with the support of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD).

Completing the list of newly elected members were Subhashish Khuntia, Debashish Samantaray, and Samik Bhattacharya, each representing the diversity and dynamism of the Indian polity.

The BJP lead NDA has 121 members in the upper house, while the INDIA bloc parties have 91 members.

Odisha Cops To Visit Kolkata For Further Investigation Into Fake Call Centre Case

Bhubaneswar, Oct 18: A team of Odisha Police will visit Kolkata for further investigation into the case pertaining to the fake call centre busted on Wednesday in the Sundarpada area of Bhubaneswar, officials said on Friday.

"Almost all of the accused persons are graduates while some of them also have technical knowledge... a team of (Bhubaneswar-Cuttack) Commissionerate police will go to Kolkata for verification of their original identity, educational qualification and other criminal antecedent," Bhubaneswar DCP Pinak Mishra told media persons.

The Bhubaneswar DCP said that the city police have sought the permission of a court to take all the six accused cyber fraudsters on a five-day remand. He expressed the hope that more information would be elicited during the interrogation of these accused persons.

The accused persons were on Thursday presented before the court which later sent them to 14 days of judicial custody.

Mishra also asserted that several other agencies have contacted the Commissionerate police in connection with the case.

"Haider Ali, the main accused, revealed that his team of six members was involved in sending fake emails to national and international clients who had subscribed to an antivirus software," police sources said.

"They impersonated customer care agents, providing fake numbers and inducing customers to make fraudulent transactions, earning them a monthly income of Rs 1 lakh. The team operated as call openers, interacting with customers in English to dupe customers," the sources said.

Police further claimed that the accused persons worked like a criminal syndicate, specifically a cybercrime, where they impersonated a customer care agency, committing identity theft, forging valuable documents, and stealing credentials from genuine customers.

Police on Wednesday busted the fake call centre being operated from an apartment in Sundarpada area of Bhubaneswar. As many as six accused persons, belonging to Kolkata, were arrested during the police raid. (IANS)

PM Modi To Visit Russia Next Week To Attend BRICS Summit In Kazan

New Delhi, Oct 18: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Russia at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin from October 22-23 to attend the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan.

The BRICS Summit in Kazan is being held under the chairmanship of Russia, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). During his visit, PM Modi is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts from BRICS member countries and invited leaders in Kazan.

The MEA said, "The Summit, themed "Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security," will provide an important platform for leaders to discuss key global issues.:"

It further said, "The Summit will offer a valuable opportunity to assess the progress of initiatives launched by BRICS and to identify potential areas for future collaboration."

The leaders of BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, and China) countries met for the first time in St Petersburg in Russia in 2006. After a series of high-level meetings, the first BRIC summit was held in Russia's Yekaterinburg in 2009.

BRIC group was renamed as BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) after South Africa was accepted as a full member at the BRIC Foreign Ministers' meeting in New York in September 2010.

BRICS is an important grouping bringing together the major emerging economies from the world, comprising 41 per cent of the world population, having 24 per cent of the world GDP and over 16 per cent share in the world trade.

Earlier in September, Russian President Vladimir Putin extended an invitation to PM Modi, proposing a bilateral meeting on October 22, on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Kazan. During the invitation, Putin also referred to PM Modi as a "good friend."

The remarks by Putin came while he met National Security Advisor Ajit Doval on the sidelines of the BRICS National Security Advisers' meeting. Putin had a meeting with Doval at the Constantine Palace in Russia's St. Petersberg.

Quoting President Putin, the Kremlin in a statement said, "We will be expecting Mr Modi in Kazan. I also suggest holding a bilateral meeting there on October 22 in order to close the books on our joint work in implementing the agreements reached during his visit to Moscow and outline some prospects for the near future."

"Please extend my warmest regards and best wishes to Mr Modi, my good friend," the statement added.

It will be PM Narendra Modi's second visit to Russia in 2024 as he travelled to Moscow in July to attend the 22nd India-Russia Annual Summit. During his visit to Russia, PM Modi held a bilateral meeting with Russian President Putin.

PM Modi was also conferred with Russia's highest civilian award, the Order of St. Andrew the Apostle at the Kremlin in Moscow. The two leaders visited the Rosatom Pavilion at the VDNKh Exhibition Centre in Moscow. (ANI)
