In a tragic incident, a rescue operation went horribly wrong in Ahmednagar's Wadki village in Maharashtra, as five people lost their lives while attempting to save a cat that had fallen into an abandoned well being used as a biogas pit.

Ahmednagar, Apr 10: In a tragic incident, a rescue operation went horribly wrong in Ahmednagar's Wadki village in Maharashtra, as five people lost their lives while attempting to save a cat that had fallen into an abandoned well being used as a biogas pit.

The tragedy occurred when one of them entered the well to rescue a cat that had fallen in it and others followed suit in an effort to rescue him as he got trapped.

The deceased have been identified as Manik Govind Kale (65), Sandeep Manik Kale (36), Bablu Anil Kale (28), Anil Bapurao Kale (53) and Babasaheb Gaikwad (36).

According to senior police officer Dhananjay Jadhav of Newasa police station in Ahmednagar district, "A rescue team recovered the bodies of the five deceased who jumped one after another into the well where animal waste was stored."

He further said, "The incident took place when a cat fell in the well on Tuesday. Following this, one person entered to rescue the cat and fell into the well. Others went in one after the other for the rescue."

"After that, the sixth person, who also in an attempt to save others, entered the well with a rope tied around his waist and survived. He was injured during the rescue process. He was taken out and rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment," added the police.

The injured person was identified as Vijay Manik Kale (35).

The police suspect that the five people reportedly fell unconscious due to gas emanating from animal waste in the well.
An investigation into the matter is underway.

Air India Express Flight's Engine Catches Fire, Makes Emergency Landing

New Delhi, May 19: The Air India Express flight from Bengaluru to Kochi had to make a full-scale emergency landing at Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) due to a fire in one of its engines.

The sources said that the crew members alerted the Air Traffic Controller after a fire was noticed soon after the take off.

"As flames were seen emanating from the right engine after takeoff, the Bengaluru- Kochi flight elected to return and carried out a precautionary landing at Bengaluru on Saturday night. The ground services also reported flames, resulting in an evacuation," said Air India's spokesperson.

"The crew accomplished an evacuation with no injuries to any guests. We regret the inconvenience this has caused and are working to provide alternative arrangements for our guests to reach their destination as soon as possible,” said the spokesperson.

"A thorough investigation with the regulator shall be accomplished to establish the cause," the spokesperson added.(IANS)

Nimapara MLA Samir Ranjan Dash Quits BJD

Puri, May 19: In another jolt to Odisha’s ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) amid the ongoing general elections, former Minister and incumbent MLA from Nimapara, Samir Ranjan Dash resigned from the primary membership of the party on Sunday, days after being denied party ticket to contest the assembly polls.

According to sources, Dash sent his resignation letter to BJD president and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.

"I have been working for the Biju Janata Dal since 2006. Today, the BJD president has lost faith in me and the party's organisation in Gop and Nimapara... it is not appropriate for me to remain in the party. Hence I am resigning from the primary membership of the BJD," Dash said in a video message.

Dash, who won from the Nimapara seat thrice in a row in 2009, 2014 and 2019 on a BJD ticket, was denied the party ticket this time. Dillip Kumar Nayak, who recently joined BJD after resigning from BJP, was rewarded with the Nimapara ticket.

Later, the three-time legislator held a series of meetings with various segments of the constituency, including women, youth, and minority groups, garnering support for his electoral bid.

Dash was in the eye of a storm for his suspected role behind the suicide of BJD zilla parishad member Dharmendra Sahoo in September 2022. In the wake of the controversy, Samir had to step down as The School And Mass Education Minister in May 2023.

In the last two months, several BJD leaders including sitting MP and MLAs quit the BJD and joined the saffron party.

The assembly and Lok Sabha polls in Odisha are being held across four phases--from May 13 to June 1.

Nimapara assembly segment under Puri Lok Sabha seat will vote on May 25.

The counting of votes will be held on June 4.

Elections 2024: PM Modi To Arrive In Odisha Today On A 2-Day Campaign Trail

Bhubaneswar, May 19: Senior BJP leader and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will arrive in Odisha today on a two-day campaign trail for the ongoing Lok Sabha and state assembly polls.

Upon his arrival on Sunday evening, PM Modi will convene a meeting with state BJP leaders in Bhubaneswar and spend the night in the city.

On Monday, the Prime Minister is slated to visit the revered Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri and hold a roadshow in the holy city. Elaborate security arrangements have been made in Puri for the roadshow of PM Modi.

Later on the day, PM Modi will address two rallies in Cuttack and Angul to seek votes in favour of the BJP candidates.

This will be PM Modi’s third visit to the state in a span of two weeks during the ongoing Lok Sabha and state assembly polls.

In his previous two visits, PM Modi said BJD’s expiry date was set on June 4 and an Odisha-born Chief Minister from BJP will take oath in the state on June 10. He also challenged Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to name the districts of Odisha without reading any paper.

The assembly and Lok Sabha polls in Odisha are being held across four phases--from May 13 to June 1.

Polling for the first phase was conducted in 28 Assembly seats and four Lok Sabha constituencies on May 13. In the fifth phase, 35 Assembly seats and five Lok Sabha constituencies will vote on May 20, 42 Assembly segments and six Lok Sabha seats on May 25, and the remaining 42 Assembly seats and six Lok Sabha constituencies in the last phase on June 1.

The counting of votes will be held on June 4.
