The BSE Sensex closed at 81,973.05, rising 591.69 points or 0.73 per cent. NSE Nifty closed at 25,127.95 after rising 163.70 points or 0.66 per cent.

The Nifty Midcap 100 index closed in the green mark at 59,465.45 after rising 252.75 points or 0.43 per cent. The Nifty Smallcap 100 index closed at 26,197.90 after rising 143.80 points or 0.55 per cent.

Buying was seen in Nifty's realty, IT, financial services, private banks, auto, PSU banks, pharma, and FMCG sectors. At the same time, there was pressure on the media, metal, and oil and gas sectors.

The market trend remained positive.

On the BSE, 1,952 shares were trading in green and 1,919 shares in red. About 140 shares closed without any change.

Wipro, Tech Mahindra, HDFC Life, L&T, and HDFC Bank were among the top gainers of Nifty. ONGC, Maruti Suzuki, Tata Steel, and Bajaj Finance were the top losers.

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) increased their selling October 11 and sold equities worth Rs 4,162.66 crore. On the other hand, domestic institutional investors (DIIs) also increased their buying and they bought equities worth Rs 3,730.87 crore on the same day.

According to market experts, optimism around potential RBI rate cuts, driven by strong domestic tax collections, further boosted sentiment. Investors are closely monitoring upcoming earnings reports from major companies, including Infosys, and the highly-anticipated Hyundai Motor India IPO.

"Globally, the focus remains on the third-quarter earnings season and the upcoming European Central Bank rate decision, with US stock futures and European shares edging higher," said Vikram Kasat from Prabhudas Lilladher.

Trade analysts said that on the daily charts, "we can observe that the Nifty has resumed its up-move towards 25,500 after a brief three-day consolidation".

The biggest buy of the first half was Belgium's Victor Wegnez, who was sold to Soorma Hockey Club for Rs 40 lakh.

Some notable overseas buys included the Dutch duo of Thierry Brinkman (Rs 38 lakh) and Arthur Van Doren (Rs 32 lakh), who were sold to Kalinga Lancers. Tomas Domene (for Rs 36 lakh to Delhi SG Pipers), 

Australia's Aran Zalewski (for Rs 27 lakh to Kalinga Lancers), and Blake Govers (for Rs 27 lakh to Tamil Nadu Dragons) were also top buys in the first half, as per a press release from Hockey India.

Meanwhile, Moriangthem Rabichandra (for Rs 32 lakh to Kalinga Lancers) and Mohd. Raheel Mouseen (for Rs 25 lakh to Tamil Nadu Dragons) were among the top Indian buys.

It was an eventful opening day of the Hockey India League Player Auction 2024/25 as 54 players, including 18 overseas players were sold here Sunday. 

All eight franchises spent as many as Rs 16 crores 88 lakhs 50 thousand on day one as the Indian Men's Hockey team core players, along with overseas drag-flickers fetched big bids.

Gurjant Singh (Rs 19 lakh) was the first player who went under the hammer, while star drag-flicker and Indian captain Harmanpreet Singh (Rs 78 lakh) emerged as the costliest buy on the opening day of the HIL 2024/25 Player Auction. Both players were acquired by Soorma Hockey Club.

Abhishek became the second-most expensive buy of the day, acquired by Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers for Rs 72 lakh, while Hardik Singh went to UP Rudras for Rs 70 lakh. Germany's Gonzalo Peillat was the most expensive overseas player as he was bought for Rs 68 lakh along with the Netherlands' Jip Janssen who was acquired for Rs 54 lakh by Tamil Nadu Dragons.

Other notable buys from the first lot included Amit Rohidas (for 48 lakh to Tamil Nadu Dragons), Jugraj Singh (for Rs 48 lakh to Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers), Sumit (for 46 lakh to Hyderabad Toofans), and Araijeet Singh Hundal (for Rs 42 lakh to Team Gonasika).

The Netherlands' duo of Lars Balk and Duco Telgenkamp were among the day's top buys. While Balk was acquired for Rs 40 lakh by UP Rudras, Telgenkamp was bought for 36 lakh by Tamil Nadu Dragons.

Foreign goalkeepers - Ireland's David Harte (for Rs 32 lakh to Tamil Nadu Dragons), Germany's Jean-Paul Danneberg (for Rs 27 lakh to Hyderabad Toofans), and the Netherlands' Pirmin Blaak (for Rs 25 lakh to Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers) also fetched big bids.

In its last Test match, which was played against Bangladesh in a rain-hit Green Park Stadium at Kanpur, India came out all guns blazing in their first innings by setting new records for the fastest 50, 100, 150, 200 and 250 scores in the longer format, before declaring at 285/9.

The Rohit Sharma-led side then chased down 95 in 17.2 to complete a blazing win and seal the series 2-0. “We want people to be aggressive, go out there and play the natural game. Why do we need to hold on people? If they can play the natural game, get 400 or 500 runs in a day, why not?”

“I've always maintained T20 cricket has to be played that way, and we will play that way. High risk, high reward, high risk, high failure, and we will continue to play that way. There will be days when we'll get bundled out for 100, but we'll take it up, continue to back our players to go out there and play high risk cricket.”

“That's how we want to play, entertain the people of this country, and even in Test cricket, we want to keep making the game go forward, and try to get the results in whatever situation we are in,” said Gambhir in a pre-series press conference.

New Zealand haven’t won a Test match in India since 1988, but Gambhir remarked the hosts’ won’t take the Tom Latham-led side lightly, citing the quality player they have and their capabilities of making the visitors’ be in the drivers’ seat at any point in the game.

Gambhir also felt the current era belongs more to bowlers than batters, adding that the country’s batter-obsessed attitude needs to end. “This is the era of the bowlers. Batters only set up the matches. It’s very important for our batsman-obsessed attitude to end. If the batters make 1000 runs, there’s still no guarantee that the team will win a Test match.”

“But if a bowler takes 20 wickets, there’s a 99% guarantee that we’ll win the match. Be it Test matches or any other formats, bowlers win you matches and tournaments. So I hope this era or the upcoming ones, we’ll talk more about bowlers than batters, and I hope the mindset changes over time.”

He signed off by backing premier batter Virat Kohli to come good after the right-handed batter made only one fifty in his last eight Test innings. “My thoughts about Virat has always been very clear - that he is a world class cricketer. He has performed for such a long period of time and he is as hungry as when he made his debut.”

“I remember opening the batting with him when he made his debut in Sri Lanka. Till now, his hunger is always and is already there. That is what makes him a world class cricketer and I am sure that he will be hungry to get runs in this series and probably moving forward to Australia as well. We know that once he gets into those runs scoring, how consistent can he be.”
