A proposal of the Home Department in this regard has been approved by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, said the release.
Assistant Sub Inspectors of police were managing affairs as in-charge officers of the police outposts until now.
According to the decision, the State Government will now appoint SIs at police outposts run by district police, Twin City Commissionerate Police and Railway police.
SIs can play a better role in managing outposts in view of their training and experience in conducting investigation, said the release.
