About 4.9 per cent of children and adolescents in India suffer from impaired kidney function, according to the first nationwide survey released on Thursday.

New Delhi, July 4: About 4.9 per cent of children and adolescents in India suffer from impaired kidney function, according to the first nationwide survey released on Thursday.

Impaired kidney function causes kidney damage to worsen over several months or years -- chronic kidney disease (CKD).

It is a significant public health problem, and its burden in children and adolescents in India is not well described.

The new study by researchers from All India Institute of Medical Sciences - Bathinda and Vijaypur, and The George Institute for Global Health India, is based on the Comprehensive National Nutrition Survey (CNNS) of 24,690 children and adolescents aged 5-19 years between 2016 and 18.

The results showed 4.9 per cent of children and adolescents, which amounts to around 49,000 cases per million population suffer from impaired kidney function.

The "key predictors include age, rural residence, lower maternal education, and stunting. Addressing these factors is crucial for improving child health outcomes", said Prof. Vivekanand Jha, Executive Director, The George Institute for Global Health, India, in a post on X.

The prevalence of impaired kidney function was found more in males and rural areas.

Further, Andhra Pradesh, followed by Telangana and West Bengal showed the highest cases, while the prevalence was lowest in Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, and Kerala.

"The high prevalence of impaired kidney function among Indian children and adolescents underscores the urgent need for targeted interventions and policies to address this growing public health issue. Time to prioritise pediatric kidney health in national health," Vivekanand Jha said.

Three Of A Family Killed As Car Rams Into Parked Truck In Andhra

Amaravati, July 8: Three members of a family were killed and two others injured when a car in which they were travelling rammed into a parked container truck in Andhra Pradesh's Eluru district on Monday, police said.

The accident occurred on the highway near Laxminagar in Dwaraka Tirumala mandal when the car hit the truck, which was parked on the roadside.

A young woman techie, who was returning home after appearing in an interview at a software company in Hyderabad, her mother and son were killed.

Rachabattuni Bhagyashree (26) along with her family was returning to Rajavolu in East Godavari district. Her two-year-old son, Rachabattuni Naga Nithin Kumar, and mother Bomma Kamaladevi (53) also died on the spot.

Bhagyashree’s other son Naga Shanmukh and driver Vamshi were injured and both were admitted to a hospital at Eluru.

Police registered a case and took up an investigation.

X manually reviewing users’ direct messages, Musk has no clear answer

New Delhi, July 8: In a worrying trend, Elon Musk-owned X is manually reviewing certain users’ direct messages (DMs) to investigate reported violations and misuse of its service, “or to comply with laws or governmental requests”.

When an X user with @kimdotcom account posted this policy update, the tech billionaire on Monday did not provide a clear answer to the query, which goes against the policy of providing end-to-end encryption to every content on the platform.

“It currently works in a clunky way for one to one messages (if you turn it on). We’re working on making it easy to use and apply to group messages too,” Musk replied.

“X audio and video calls are automatically encrypted,” he added.

Several users raised an alarm over X apparently manually reviewing DMs.

“Is it me or did Elon not understand the question of Kim? Kim was worried about reviewing the DMs by government request,” an X user posted.

Another user commented: “You didn’t address the root on the concern. Why is X collaborating with governments to sift through our private DMs?”

Great To Be Back On Winning Note Again: Shubman Gill

Harare, July 8: Skipper Shubman Gill credited the blistering knocks of Abhishek Sharma and Ruturaj Gaikwad as India outclassed Zimbabwe by 100 runs in the second T20I Sunday. Gill said it was great to be back on a winning note as India levelled the series 1-1 after losing the opening match.

After a sloppy performance in the series opener, Indian batters displayed their attacking skills as Abhishek slammed a 46-ball century while Gaikwad scored an unbeaten 77 to power the side to 234/2 in 20 overs.

In reply, Avesh Khan and Mukesh Kumar bagged three wickets each while Ravi Bishnoi clinched two scalps to bundle out the hosts for 134 in 18.4 overs.

"Very happy, great to be back on the winning note back again. With the way Abhishek and Rutu batted, it was not easy especially in the powerplay, with the ball moving around but Abhi and Rutu built the innings brilliantly. Yesterday, it was more about not being able to handle the pressure, it's a young side and many of them are new to international exposure," Gill said after the match.

Gill admitted they were under pressure after losing the first match of the series but were confident of their comeback abilities.

"It was actually good to have pressure in the first game and we knew what to expect coming into this game. We have got three matches to go and we are looking forward to them. It's always good to have more options rather than not having options," the opener said.

The third T20I between India and Zimbabwe will be played Wednesday.
