The police also seized the vehicle which was carrying the contraband item. However, the ganja smugglers managed to flee from the spot, leaving the ganga-laden Innova car on the road.
Acting on a tip-off about the smuggling of ganja, a police team led by Nandapur SDPO stopped a speeding SUV at Badkichab river ghat near Odisha-Andhra border. Seeing the police, the occupants of the vehicle stopped the car from distance and fled from the spot.
While frisking the SUV, police recovered 219 kg of ganja worth over Rs 20 lakh from the vehicle. Subsequently, the cops seized the ganja as well as the vehicle.
The smugglers were allegedly planning to smuggle the contraband to outside of the State through the river route, police sources said.
Meanwhile, a case has been registered at Lamtaput police outpost in this connection. Police initiated an investigation to find out the persons involved in the illegal trade, sources added.
