Bhubaneswar, Nov 27: Nityananda Gond, Minister of School & Mass Education, has said that the Odisha government is planning to implement National Education Policy 2020 (NEP) in the state at school level by 2025.

"We are planning to implement NEP at school level by 2025," said Gond, adding that the government is taking steps one after another.

Speaking about the development in this connection, the School & Mass Education Minister said that a committee has been formed to make the process as smooth as possible.

"A special taskforce committee has been formed, who will oversee the process of implementing NEP," said Nityananda Gond, who also holds the Ministry of ST & SC Development, Minorities & Backward Classes Welfare.

"In addition, six sub-committees have also been formed to assist the taskforce committee," he added. Gond said that the sub-committees will give suggestions and recommendations to ease the process.

"All the sub-committees will give recommendations. After getting all the opinions and views from the sub-committees, the special taskforce committee will take the final call and forward it to the government to implement the NEP in Odisha," explained the School & Mass Education Minister.

Addressing the issue of lack of teachers in the state, Gond said that the government is trying its best to solve the issue as soon as possible. "Preparations are underway to solve the vacancies in schools," he stated.

"We have already gathered the data on what is needed for the growth of education. The department is trying its best to fulfill all the needs in education sector," assured the Minister.

What Is National Education Policy?

The National Education Policy aims to restructure the regulation and governance of the Indian education system to address (sustainable) developmental goals of the country.

The general objective of the National Education Policy is to create an equitable and inclusive education system that can provide learning for all.

In school education, the NEP stresses on the core values and principle that education must develop not only the cognitive skills, that is both ‘foundational skills’ of literacy and numeracy and ‘higher-order’ skills such as critical thinking and problem solving, but also, social and emotional skills - also referred to as ‘soft skills’ including cultural awareness and empathy, perseverance and grit, teamwork, leadership, communication, among others.

The Policy aims and aspires to universalize the pre-primary education and provides special emphasis on the attainment of foundational literacy/numeracy in primary school and beyond for all by 2025.
