Buidling Collapse / One Killed, Six Rescued After Building Collapses In Delhi’s Satya Niketan

New Delhi, Sep 6: One person was killed and six others were rescued after a multi-storey building collapsed in Delhi’s Satya Niketan area on Sunday, officials said.

Delhi Police said the 40-50-year-old building had a basement and five upper floors and was being used as a paying guest accommodation. Repair work was underway in the basement when the structure collapsed.

One person was pulled from the rubble and taken to the AIIMS Trauma Department, where he was declared dead.

Eyewitness Claims More People Trapped
Another eyewitness claimed that around 20-30 people might still be trapped under the debris.

“We had gone to help. We rescued two children who were still breathing. Two more children were trapped there and were calling for help. We held their hands to try to rescue them, but by then, they had already lost their lives,” he told IANS.

The claim regarding the number of people trapped could not be independently verified.

Rescue Ops Underway On War Footing
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta expressed concern over the incident and said every possible effort was being made to rescue those trapped.

Taking to X, Gupta said teams from the Delhi Disaster Management Authority, National Disaster Response Force, Delhi Fire Services, Delhi Police, Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Centralised Accident and Trauma Services and Civil Defence were conducting rescue operations.

She said the adjacent building had been vacated as a precautionary measure.

“Every possible effort is being made to safely rescue those trapped and provide immediate assistance to the affected families. The situation is being closely monitored, and all concerned agencies are working in coordination. The safety and well-being of every citizen remain our highest priority,” the chief minister said.

Locals Report Second Collapse In Area
Local residents claimed the incident was the second building collapse reported in the area.

A Delhi University student staying at a PG accommodation adjacent to the collapsed building described the moments after the incident.

“Soon after we finished lunch, we felt an earthquake had struck the area. We were on the fourth floor and could feel that the entire building was shaking at the moment. We came to the balcony and could only see dust filling the area. Still, we thought that it was the impact of an earthquake,” he told IANS.

He said he and others later realised that a building had collapsed and helped rescue a person from the rubble before police and fire personnel arrived.

“Only after coming downstairs we realised that a building had collapsed. Immediately, I, along with a few others, pulled out one person from the rubble before police or the fire brigade could reach here,” he said.

“There is panic in the area; our parents are constantly calling. I don’t think it’s safe to stay here anymore,” he added.
