Ganjam, Mar 31: A major accident occurred on Tuesday when an acid-laden tanker overturned at Haridamula Ghat in Khallikote police station limits along National Highway 16.
The acid tanker, carrying 25 tonnes of acid from
Vizianagaram in Andhra Pradesh to Angul, lost balance while negotiating a sharp
turn and overturned. The incident disrupted traffic between Berhampur and
Bhubaneswar, causing significant delays.

Following the accident, acid began leaking onto the road, creating hazardous conditions. Locals reported difficulty in breathing due to fumes.

✨Fire services and police rushed to the spot, immediately
cordoning off the area and initiating safety measures. Sand was spread across
the road to neutralize the acid, while water was used to wash away the chemical
residue.

Officials confirmed that the tanker driver sustained minor injuries but is safe. The administration has assured that all precautionary steps are being taken to prevent further risk. Fire service personnel remain on-site to monitor and control the situation.
Though the exact cause of the accident is yet to be
determined, authorities suspect overspeeding while turning may have led to the
mishap. Fortunately, since the tanker overturned on the ghat stretch, the risk
to nearby residents was minimal.
