Key Points

  • Cena ends his 20+ year WWE career by tapping out to Gunther in a dramatic main event.
  • Entire WWE roster, legends, and executives joined in a powerful postmatch tribute.
  • Cena left his shoes and armbands in the ring, symbolizing the end of an era.

Washington, Dec 14: John Cena — the wrestler, who was known for his resilience with a motto that said “Never Give Up” — has finally gave up. He tapped out.

In Cena’s farewell match, the final move — a submission move — by his opponent Gunther saw the 17time world champion finally gave up. With his eyes shut and lips closed having a very soft smile, he tapped out as if he was saying: “That’s it. I’m done. I’m satisfied.”

John Cena’s remarkable twodecade journey in WWE reached its emotional conclusion on Saturday night, as the wrestling great stepped into the ring for the final time at Washington DC’s Capital One Arena.

The moment carried the weight of history, headlining the last WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event of 2025 and marking the end of one of the most influential careers the industry has ever seen.

His farewell bout against Gunther was everything fans hoped for — intense, physical, and deeply sentimental. The 24minute contest saw Cena push himself to the limit, drawing thunderous support from a crowd determined to will him toward one last miracle.

But in classic Cena fashion, he chose to elevate the future rather than rewrite the past, tapping out to Gunther in a finish that symbolized his longstanding commitment to passing the torch.

The entire event reflected that ethos. Instead of turning the show into a Cena tribute marathon, WWE used the night to spotlight rising NXT talent, a decision that underscored the healthier, more vibrant landscape Cena leaves behind.

Fans may have been stunned by the result, but gratitude quickly replaced shock as the locker room gathered to honour the man who helped define an era.

One last ‘Super AA’

Cena’s farewell couldn’t have been more fitting. He lay beneath the lights one last time, doing what he’s always done best — elevating the next generation. There were stretches where it genuinely felt like Cena might pull off one more miracle, and he threw everything he had at “The Ring General.” The move, Super AA — his improvised finishing move — was definitely one for the highlights. It may not have been the standout match of Cena’s retirement run, but as a closing chapter for a legendary career, it was exactly the ending it needed to be.

End of an Era

After the match, Cena remained seated in the centre of the ring, got to his knees, and kissed the ring absorbing the moment as chants of “thank you, Cena” echoed through the arena.

Gesture of Tribute

What followed was a heartfelt procession: CM Punk, Cody Rhodes, WWE legends, executives, and eventually the entire roster joined him on the ramp. Punk and Rhodes handed Cena their championship belts, a symbolic gesture acknowledging his legacy and influence.

Leaving his Legacy Behind

The farewell reached its emotional peak when Paul “Triple H” Levesque directed Cena’s attention to a tribute video chronicling his career. When the lights came back up, Cena left his shoes and armbands in the ring — a wrestler’s final sign of departure — before offering one last salute to the fans who carried him for more than 20 years.

It was not just the end of a career. It was the closing chapter of an era that reshaped WWE.
