Shreemayee Mishra Hits Back After BJD Suspension

Key Points

Shreemayee Mishra questions BJD leader Pratap Jena’s alleged use of another MLA’s government quarters.

She asserts Odia identity and self-respect in a fiery response to her suspension.

Bhubaneswar, Sep 24: A day after her suspension from the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), firebrand leader Shreemayee Mishra on Wednesday targeted senior BJD leader and former Minister Pratap Jena, questioning his alleged occupation of an MLA quarters in Bhubaneswar.

Social Media Post Raises Eyebrows
In her latest Facebook post, written in Odia, Mishra said: “What did I just hear? Hon’ble Pratap Jena is residing in another MLA’s government quarters. Is there a provision that allows one MLA to rent the official residence to another? I await a response from the people of Odisha."

Her post, widely circulated online, has triggered speculation about internal rifts in BJD and raised questions about transparency in the allocations of MLA quarters.

Suspension Sparks Outcry
The opposition BJD on Tuesday suspended three leaders, including its general secretary (women's affairs) Shreemayee Mishra, from the party for their alleged "anti-party" activities.

In a brief statement issued by party vice president Pratap Jena, the BJD announced the suspension of Mishra along with Subas Chandra Sai and Prabir Chandra Sai with immediate effect.

Cryptic Posts and Political Fallout
BJD leader Mishra was in the news recently for her social media posts that described Mahabharat characters, without naming anyone.

In a Facebook post, Mishra wrote about society’s perception of monks, stating that true renunciation involves detachment from worldly pleasures. She added that when this principle is violated, such individuals are labeled as “fake monks.” Though she did not name anyone, political observers believe the post was aimed at VK Pandian, who had announced his retirement from politics following the BJD’s debacle in the 2024 Assembly and Lok Sabha polls in Odisha.

In another post, Mishra narrated the rule of ‘Dhritarashtra’ depicted in Mahabharat without naming anyone. However, the post was seen as an attack on BJD president and former CM Naveen Patnaik's leadership.

A Defiant Stand
Soon after her suspension, Mishra, in a social media post, said, "I have never compromised on my self-esteem and self-pride, nor will I do so in the future. As I have not renewed my membership of the party for the past one year, my suspension from it will help people to laugh."

"Under the misguided influence of a non-Odia, a leader who has ruled the state for so long, playing with the self-esteem of an Odia daughter is hardly logical; the judgment is yours. It has now been proved that the heir of a legendary leader, who always called for giving respect to women, is not capable of taking decisions on his own. To prove that I am truly an Odia daughter, I will never sacrifice my self-esteem," she added.

Mishra, who hails from Balangir district, was once close to the BJD's top leadership. She pitched herself hard for a Lok Sabha ticket from the Bhubaneswar seat in the 2024 elections, but it was denied at the last moment, following which she started distancing herself from Sankha Bhavan and Naveen Niwas.
