Puri, Oct 3: A 200-year-old school located inside the sacred premises of the Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri is poised for a major revival, following the intervention from Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, officials said on Friday.
The school, situated near the Bimala Temple within the Srimandir complex, is currently run by the Pujapanda Nijog and operates as an aided institution. Established in 1802, it holds a permanent record of rights and offers five classes. While Classes VI and VII receive government grants, Classes VIII to X are only partially supported, with expenses borne solely by the temple servitor body.
Ministerial Push for Restoration
During his visit to the 12th century temple in August this year, Minister Pradhan expressed concern over the school’s condition and emphasized its cultural significance. He proposed discussions with the District Collector, Education Department officials, and the Odisha’s Education Minister to explore restoration options. He also wrote to the Law Minister, urging the state government to take over its management.
Cultural Legacy and Future Prospects
The school plays a vital role in imparting Sanskrit, Vedic education, and ritual training to children of temple servitors. If brought under the School and Mass Education Department, it could receive comprehensive development support while preserving the Jagannath cultural heritage for future generations.
Puri’s District Collector and Deputy Chief Administrator of the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration confirmed that the matter is under discussion within the temple’s management committee and that steps will be taken soon.
The revival of this ancient institution is seen as a crucial move to blend traditional learning with modern educational infrastructure, ensuring continuity of Odisha’s spiritual and scholastic legacy.
