Bhubaneswar, Jan 13: The twin hills of Khandagiri and Udaygiri are abuzz with preparations for the annual Khandagiri Magha Mela, one of the capital city’s most prominent religious gatherings. This year, for the first time, the deity of Lord Narayan will be displayed in his Vishwaroop (universal form) at the shrine of Maa Barabhuja, officials said on Tuesday.
The mela will commence on Magha Saptami with a holy dip in the Gupt Ganga, followed by homa yajnas, puja rituals, and bustling fairs. The chants of saints and the recitation of Vedic mantras are expected to create a deeply spiritual atmosphere at the foothills of Khandagiri.
The fairgrounds will also witness vibrant trade and commerce, with artisans and organisers already engaged in preparations. Saints from across the country will arrive here to participate in the mela, adding to the religious fervour. Local sculptor Durjyodhan Bhoi said anticipation is high among devotees awaiting the rituals and festivities.

With thousands of devotees expected to attend, the BMC is focusing on addressing basic infrastructure challenges, including sanitation, crowd management, and facilities for visiting saints. Officials said efforts are underway to ensure smooth conduct of the mela and to preserve its cultural and spiritual significance.
The Magha Mela, popularly known as the Khandagiri Magha Mela, has long been a confluence of spirituality, tradition, and community life. This year’s addition of Narayan’s Vishwaroop is expected to draw larger crowds and deepen the devotional experience, reinforcing the mela’s place as a major cultural event in the State Capital.
