Key Points
- Patitapaban darshan at Puri's Jagannath Temple was delayed well past 9am, disappointing thousands of devotees.
- The delay was linked to a personal bereavement in a sevayat's family, affecting the morning ritual schedule.
- Heavy New Year pilgrim footfall continued, with darshan at the main temple going on until late night.
Puri, Jan 2: Devotees were left disappointed on Friday morning after darshan of Patitapaban deity at the Jagannath Temple remained closed well past the scheduled time, denying darshan to thousands despite it being after 9 am.
The delay led to the postponement of the Patitapaban Aarti, which was finally performed at 9:54 am, temple sources confirmed. Until then, the Patitapaban gate remained shut, leaving devotees -- especially those who customarily offer prayers from outside the Srimandir --unable to have darshan.
Devotees Return Disappointed
A large number of pilgrims, including those standing near Radhaballabh Math, were seen returning disappointed after waiting for hours. For many devotees who do not enter the main temple, Patitapaban Jagannath is considered a sacred manifestation of Lord Jagannath, making the delay particularly distressing.
Several devotees expressed dissatisfaction, pointing out that on most days they complete their prayers at Patitapaban and proceed with their daily routines. “Today, Patitapaban remained in darkness, and we could not have darshan,” said a pilgrim.
Ritual Delay linked to Sevayat Issue
According to a source, the delay was linked to a personal bereavement in a sevayat’s family, with the 'Dasaha' ritual reportedly observed on Thursday, resulting in the disruption of today's morning schedule. As a result, neither the gate was opened on time nor was the Patitapaban Aarti conducted as scheduled.
Temple authorities later opened the Patitapaban gate, restoring darshan after a considerable delay.
Heavy New Year Footfall
The incident occurred amid a massive New Year rush in Puri, with lakhs of devotees thronging the Srimandir despite dense fog and cold conditions. Officials said darshan at the main temple had continued late into the night, with devotees offering prayers till 1.55 am due to the heavy influx.
