Odisha Govt Takes Robust Measures To Tackle Cyclone ‘Montha’

Bhubaneswar, Oct 28: As Cyclone ‘Montha’ approaches the eastern coast, the Odisha government has activated a comprehensive disaster response plan aimed at ensuring zero casualties and minimizing damage, officials said on Tuesday.

 

With vulnerable districts on high alert, the administration has mobilized resources across all levels to safeguard lives and property.

 

Evacuation and Shelter Preparedness

A total of 2,048 cyclone and flood shelters have been prepared in the districts of Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, and Nabarangpur, which are likely to be highly affected. So far, 11,396 people have been evacuated across eight districts. If necessary, an additional 30,554 individuals will be relocated to safer locations, the officials said.

 

Special Care for Expectant Mothers 

As many as 1,871 pregnant women have already been shifted to nearby health centers, and another 822 will be relocated. Altogether, 2,693 pregnant women will be admitted to health centers.

Emergency Response Teams Deployed

The State government has deployed 30 ODRAF teams, 5 NDRF units, and 123 fire service squads across the affected districts. These teams are equipped to handle rescue operations, provide medical assistance, and manage post-cyclone recovery.

Infrastructure and Utility Readiness

Concerned Engineering departments are on standby to ensure uninterrupted electricity and drinking water supply. Backup generators have been placed at all critical service points. Health centers in affected areas are stocked with essential medicines, injections, and treatment kits.

 

Post-Cyclone Relief Measures

Instructions have been issued to conduct immediate crop damage assessments and provide compensation to farmers. The government is committed to restoring livelihoods and infrastructure swiftly after the cyclone passes.

 

Montha Nears Landfall

Cyclone Montha has intensified into a severe storm, battering several districts in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha with heavy rains and strong winds up to 110 kmph. Moving north-northwestwards, it is expected to make landfall near Kakinada between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam by tonight.
