Key Points

  • Possible cyclone about 1000 km from Odisha coast; clarity after Nov 25.
  • Two low-pressure systems in Bay of Bengal may merge into severe cyclone.
  • Odisha govt assures preparedness; Tamil Nadu may face greater impact.

Bhubaneswar, Nov 24: With cyclone fears rising in the Bay of Bengal, Odisha’s Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari has assured that the state government is fully prepared to tackle any situation.

Speaking to the media, Pujari highlighted that Odisha’s prior preparedness had minimized the impact of Cyclone Montha last month, and similar measures are already in place for the current system.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a possible cyclone is currently located about 1000 kilometers away from the Odisha coast. Clarity on its trajectory and intensity is expected after November 25.

Meteorologists have identified two separate low-pressure systems in the Bay of Bengal. One system, originating near the Malacca Strait, is likely to intensify into a depression today and further strengthen over the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining south Andaman Sea. Within the next 48 hours, it may develop into a cyclone, potentially around November 26 or 27.

Meanwhile, another low-pressure system is forming, creating uncertainty among weather models about the eventual path and strength of the cyclone.

Odisha Disaster Management Minister emphasized that the government is prepared for all eventualities, including evacuation, relief, and rehabilitation measures. Disaster management teams have been alerted, and district administrations have been instructed to remain vigilant.

Experts caution that if the two systems merge, the resulting cyclone could be severe. However, the exact impact on Odisha will only be clear once the systems become more organized, likely by late Monday afternoon or evening.

The government reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, assuring that all necessary steps will be taken to mitigate risks.
