Cyclone Alert / Odisha Braces For Possible Cyclone As October Weather Turns Hostile

Key Points
Final system around October 29 may intensify into a cyclone.
Odisha government fully prepared for possible cyclone.
Bhubaneswar,
Oct 22: As October progresses, Odisha braces for another potential cyclone,
stirring memories of the devastating super cyclone that struck the state on
October 29, 1999.
With three consecutive low-pressure systems forming in the Bay of Bengal, meteorologists are raising concerns about a possible intensification into a cyclonic storm by the end of the month.
Consecutive Low-Pressure Systems Raise Alarm
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has identified three back-to-back low-pressure zones, with the third expected to be the most powerful. Experts warn that one system may feed strength into the next, increasing the likelihood of cyclone formation.
Dr. Sarat Sahu, a noted weather scientist, predicts that the final low-pressure system forming around October 29 could evolve into a cyclone due to favorable atmospheric conditions.

✨Cyclone Formation Likely by Month-End
According to
Dr. Sahu, the return of the southwest monsoon and the strengthening of the
northeast monsoon make late October an ideal window for cyclone development.
The GFS model from the U.S. had earlier indicated similar possibilities. The
second and third low-pressure systems are expected to form around October 26
and 29, respectively, with the third showing signs of greater intensity.

Rainfall Expected Across Coastal Regions
A cyclonic circulation is already active near South Andaman, likely to generate another low-pressure area by October 24. This could lead to continuous rainfall across Odisha for seven days. Tamil Nadu’s coast is also witnessing active low-pressure activity, expected to deepen within 12 hours and expand rainfall across southern inland and coastal areas by October 24.
Government Preparedness
Revenue Minister Suresh Pujari asserted that the Odisha government is fully prepared for any eventuality. He stated that rainfall will begin in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu from tomorrow, with Odisha’s coast also likely to be affected. Even if the impact is minimal, departments are alert and ready to respond, the Minister added.
