Key Points

MLA Sanatan Mahakud criticises previous BJD Govt's lack of development in Keonjhar.

He praises CM Mohan Majhi while attacking his own party's organisation.

Earlier, Badrinarayan Patra and Latika Pradhan voiced similar dissent.

Rising factionalism raises concerns about BJD’s organisational stability.

Bhubaneswar, Jan 14: The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) is facing fresh turbulence with another senior leader openly criticising the Naveen Patnaik-led party. Senior BJD MLA Sanatan Mahakud has joined the chorus of dissent, following similar statements from several leaders in Balasore and Ganjam in recent past. His remarks have intensified speculation about widening cracks within the opposition party’s organisational structure.

Sanatan Mahakud’s Statement

Mahakud, known as a strongman from Champua in Keonjhar district, lashed out at his own party, alleging that the previous BJD government had failed to deliver meaningful development in Keonjhar despite being in power for 24 years. While criticising the BJD, he simultaneously praised BJP leader and Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, describing him as a leader of vision and integrity. This contrasting stance has drawn attention, with political observers noting the unusual mix of criticism for his party and admiration for CM Majhi, who also hails from Keonjhar district.

More Instances of Dissent
The Champua MLA’s statement comes close on the heels of senior party leader Badrinarayan Patra’s sharp criticism during the BJD’s foundation day celebrations, where Patra targeted senior leader Bobby Das and the party’s influential strategist V.K. Pandian. Similarly, former MLA Latika Pradhan accused the party of deliberately weakening candidates in Ganjam, triggering controversy. These remarks have added fuel to the perception of growing dissatisfaction among senior party leaders.

Reactions Within the Party

Responding to Mahakud’s comments, BJD MLA Pradeep Dishari urged him to introspect and review his own performance before criticising the party. Party insiders admit that discontent has been simmering across districts, with organisational elections in Balasore and Khordha yet to be concluded due to factionalism.

Rising Concerns

The increasing frequency of public dissent has raised questions about the party’s internal cohesion. With younger leaders also voicing disapproval of Pandian’s influence, the silence of BJD president Naveen Patnaik has become a subject of debate. Analysts warn that if the unrest continues unchecked, the BJD could face serious organisational challenges, potentially weakening its hold in several districts.
