Rs8,307 Cr six-lane Greenfield highway to decongest Bhubaneswar and Cuttack.

Bhubaneswar, Aug 19: Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Tuesday extended his heartfelt thanks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari following the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA)’s approval of the Rs8,307.74 crore Capital Region Ring Road project in Odisha.

In a post on X, Pradhan described the six-lane, access-controlled Greenfield highway as a “game-changer” for Odisha’s infrastructure, aligning with the Prime Minister’s Purvodaya mission to accelerate development in eastern India. The 110.875 km Bhubaneswar Bypass will decongest traffic in the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, reduce logistics costs, and create new employment opportunities.

“This ambitious project will strengthen Odisha’s road connectivity and catalyze socio-economic growth,” Pradhan wrote in Odia, emphasizing its transformative potential.

The ring road will integrate with three National Highways (NH-55, NH-57, NH-655) and one State Highway (SH-65), offering seamless connectivity to key economic, social, and logistics nodes across the state. The project is expected to generate 74.43 lakh person-days of direct employment and 93.04 lakh person-days of indirect employment, according to an official statement.

Additionally, the corridor will enhance multi-modal integration, linking 10 Economic Nodes, 4 Social Nodes, and 5 Logistic Nodes, and connecting with 1 major railway station, 1 airport, 1 proposed Multi-Modal Logistics Park (MMLP), and 2 major ports. This will facilitate faster movement of goods and passengers across the region.

The existing stretch between Rameswar and Tangi faces severe congestion due to high traffic volumes through urban centers like Khordha, Bhubaneswar, and Cuttack. The new bypass will offer a high-speed alternative, improving travel efficiency and safety.

The project is poised to unlock new avenues of growth, attract investments, and reinforce Odisha’s role as a strategic logistics hub in eastern India.
