Cops along with forensic team begin probe into the gruesome murder in Kumbhirda village

Key Points

An elderly woman, Joba Tudu, was allegedly killed by her neighbour Jugu Marandi on suspicion of witchcraft in Mayurbhanj's Kumbhirda village.
Baripada, Feb 28: An elderly woman was allegedly killed on suspicion of practising witchcraft in a village in Mayurbhanj district, police said Saturday.

The crime took place in Kumbhirda village under Bahalda police station limits. Police identified the accused as Jugu Marandi, a resident of the same village. He allegedly entered the house of the victim, identified as Joba Tudu, and slit her throat with a sharp weapon late at night.

According to police, the accused suspected that the woman had cast an evil spell on his wife, who had been suffering from prolonged illness. Investigators said Marandi believed Tudu had caused his wife’s health condition through witchcraft, prompting the attack.

After the incident, the accused surrendered at Rairangpur Town Police Station, police officials said.

Senior officers, including Additional Superintendent of Police Jadunath Jena and SDPO Birendra Senapati, reached the scene. A four-member scientific team from Baripada assisted in the recovery of the body and collection of evidence.

The body was sent for post-mortem examination. Police launched an investigation and legal proceedings are underway.

Family members of the deceased have demanded strict action against the accused.

Sarai Tudu, a relative of the deceased woman, said, "She generally wakes up early in the morning and goes out for work between 7am and 7:30am. Today, we got worried as she did not come out in the morning. When we went to her house, the front door was locked from the inside. Afterwards, we entered the house from the back side and found her body lying in a pool of blood."

The incident has once again highlighted the persistence of superstition-related violence in rural areas despite growing awareness campaigns.
