Bhubaneswar, Jan 28: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Wednesday presented its budget for 2026–27, pegged at Rs1,050 crore, during the 38th General Council meeting chaired by Mayor Sulochana Das. The budget includes Rs300 crore from the corporation’s own revenue sources and Rs750 crore through government grants, officials said.

A key decision taken during the session was the strict enforcement of the State government’s gutkha ban law. The BMC resolved to intensify monitoring and penal action against vendors found selling gutkha and related products at vending zones and Omfed booths. Officials said enforcement drives would be strengthened to ensure compliance across the city.

Mayor Das emphasized that the Corporation’s priorities remain aligned with public health and welfare. “The gutkha ban is not just a legal directive but a social responsibility. BMC will ensure that enforcement is uncompromising,” she said.

The budget also highlighted the Corporation’s focus on balancing revenue generation with welfare measures. With a significant portion of funds coming from government allocations, BMC aims to channel resources into infrastructure, sanitation, and citizen-centric services while ensuring strict adherence to health-related regulations.

The decision to intensify gutkha enforcement has been welcomed by residents, who have long demanded stronger action against illegal sales. Officials noted that the move reflects the Corporation’s commitment to improving living standards and safeguarding public health in the capital city.
