Bhubaneswar Shivers At 9.2°C, Coldest Night In 22 Years
Bhubaneswar records coldest night in 22 years at 9.2°C.

Key Points

  • Bhubaneswar records 9.2°C, coldest night since 2004.
  • Third-lowest January night temperature in city’s history.
  • Clear skies and northerly winds drive mercury down.

Bhubaneswar, Jan 10: The capital city of Odisha, Bhubaneswar, shivered through its coldest night in 22 years, with the minimum temperature plunging to 9.2°C on Friday night. According to the Meteorological Centre, this marks the lowest night temperature recorded in Bhubaneswar since 2004, making it the third-lowest January night temperature on record.

City residents woke up to a biting chill as the mercury dipped sharply under clear skies and dry northerly winds. The unusual cold wave has gripped the city, with conditions more severe than in recent years. The drop in temperature has been attributed to the combined effect of cold winds from the north and reduced cloud cover, allowing heat to escape rapidly during the night.

The weather office noted that while Bhubaneswar has experienced cold spells in the past, the current dip is significant, breaking a two-decade record. The city’s minimum temperature has rarely fallen below 10°C in recent years, underscoring the severity of the present cold wave.

Wethermen have urged residents to take precautions against the chill, particularly vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly and those without adequate shelter. The administration has also advised people to use warm clothing and exercise caution while using electrical heating appliances.

With the cold wave expected to persist for the next few days, Bhubaneswar continues to brace for more chilly nights, adding to the winter discomfort across Odisha.
