Bhubaneswar, Oct 17:  In a proud moment for Odisha’s healthcare sector, the Viral Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (VRDL) at AIIMS Bhubaneswar has been conferred with the prestigious Silver Award by the Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, officials said on Friday.

 

The recognition celebrates the lab’s exceptional contributions to viral diagnostics, research, and public health support across India.

 

The award was presented during the VRDL Conclave held at Manekshaw Centre, New Delhi, organized by the Department of Health Research (DHR). The event aimed to honour high-performing laboratories and review the progress of the national VRDL network. Dr. Baijayantimala Mishra, Head of Microbiology, and Dr. Bhagirathi Dwibedi, Associate Dean Research and Professor of Paediatrics, received the award on behalf of AIIMS Bhubaneswar. The felicitation was led by Smt. Anupriya Patel, Minister of State for Health & Family Welfare, and Dr. Rajiv Bahl, Secretary of DHR and Director General of ICMR.

Executive Director & CEO of AIIMS Bhubaneswar, Dr. Ashutosh Biswas, congratulated the VRDL team and reaffirmed the institute’s commitment to advancing diagnostics and research. He emphasized the lab’s role in strengthening public health infrastructure and its readiness to tackle future health challenges.

The VRDL has provided free diagnostic services to over 20,000 patients, covering more than 50 types of viral infections. It has played a critical role during outbreaks, epidemics, and pandemics, including COVID-19, Japanese Encephalitis, Measles, and Hand-Foot-Mouth Disease. Accredited by NABL, the lab also contributes to global research through high-impact publications.

 

Beyond diagnostics, the VRDL serves as a regional training hub for medical professionals and students, enhancing viral disease management and building diagnostic capacity. As part of the national VRDL network comprising 165 labs, AIIMS Bhubaneswar’s facility stands out for its consistent excellence and community impact.
