New Delhi, Jan 27: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh chaired an all-party meeting in the Parliament House Complex on Tuesday to discuss the upcoming Budget Session of Parliament, 2026, Officials said.

The meeting, convened by Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, sought cooperation from political parties to ensure smooth functioning of both Houses during the session.

 

The meeting witnessed participation from 51 leaders representing 39 political parties. Among those present were Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda, who also serves as Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha, Law and Justice Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, and Parliamentary Affairs and Information and Broadcasting Minister L. Murugan.

 

In his opening remarks, Rajnath Singh welcomed the leaders and emphasised the importance of consensus and constructive debate. He underlined that cooperation across party lines was essential for effective parliamentary functioning. Rijiju briefed the gathering that the Budget Session will commence on January 28 and, subject to government business, conclude on April 2. Both Houses will adjourn for recess on February 13 and reconvene on March 9 to allow Standing Committees to examine Demands for Grants. The session will comprise 30 sittings spread over 65 days.

Rijiju further informed that the session will primarily focus on financial business related to the Union Budget 2026–27 and the Motion of Thanks on the President’s Address. Essential legislative and other business will be taken up mainly in the second part of the session. He confirmed that the Economic Survey will be presented on January 29, followed by the Union Budget on February 1.

Leaders of various political parties expressed their views on issues they intend to raise during the session and assured cooperation. The government reiterated its readiness to discuss important matters as per parliamentary rules. Rijiju thanked all leaders for their active participation and constructive inputs.

 

The meeting underscored the government’s intent to ensure consensus and effective debate during the Budget Session, which is expected to be dominated by fiscal priorities, legislative business, and pressing national concerns.
