The new IIM is part of a broader vision led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aimed at addressing regional disparities and fostering inclusive growth through world-class education.
The institute’s creation stems from a trilateral agreement between the Union Government, the Assam Government, and the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), focused on the comprehensive development of Assam. The move aligns with the government’s “Purvodaya” initiative and the “Ashtalakshmi” vision, which seeks to empower the eight Northeastern states through strategic investments in infrastructure, education, and employment.

The new institute will be the 22nd IIM in India and the second in the Northeast, following IIM Shillong. It is expected to attract top-tier faculty, foster innovation, and create new opportunities for students across the region.
Education experts have welcomed the move, noting that it will help bridge the gap in access to premier institutions in the Northeast and encourage local talent to pursue advanced studies without relocating to distant cities.
As Assam prepares to welcome its first IIM, the move is
being seen as a strategic leap toward inclusive growth, regional empowerment,
and academic excellence.
