Madurai, Sep 23: A disturbing case of ragging has surfaced from the Government Kallar College hostel in Checkanurani, Madurai, where a 15-year-old student was allegedly assaulted by three fellow hostel inmates, police said on Tuesday.

The incident, which came to light after a video of the attack went viral on social media, has triggered outrage and renewed calls for stricter anti-ragging enforcement across educational institutions in Tamil Nadu.

Madurai Rural Police today registered a case against three 17-year-old minors for allegedly ragging and physically assaulting a first-year student of the Government Industrial Training Institute (ITI) in Checkanurani.

The victim was reportedly stripped and beaten inside a hostel room, an act that was captured on video and widely circulated online.

The police launched an investigation after the victim’s father filed a formal complaint. The accused have been taken in for questioning, and the authorities have confirmed that the incident is not caste-related, despite initial speculation.

Meanwhile, the hostel warden has been suspended for negligence in ensuring student safety.

Officials from the education department have initiated a detailed investigation into the incident. The case has reignited concerns over the prevalence of ragging in hostels and the psychological trauma it inflicts on young students.

Social activists and educators are urging the government to implement more robust monitoring systems and counseling support within hostels.

The victim is currently receiving medical and psychological care, while legal proceedings against the accused are underway, sources said.

The incident has drawn widespread condemnation and is being seen as a wake-up call for educational institutions to prioritize student welfare and safety.
