Notably, Jagadish Chouhan, a resident of Kalyanpur village under Jonk police station limits in Nuapada district had poured petrol on his body and set himself on fire in front of the Tehsil office. He succumbed to burn injuries while undergoing treatment at VIMSAR, Burla.
Das held the Tehsil responsible for his death and requested the NHRC to order the State Government for a proper probe and punishment for the errant. He too requested the apex human rights body to order the Government to pay a compensation of Rs 50 lakh to the bereaved family.
Jagadish, who belonged to SC community, had requested the Tehsildar of Nuapada Tehsil to grant permission to sell his own land to person belonging to other community. He also approached the Sub-Collector, Nuapada in this regard, but in vain.

Yesterday, the man visited the Tehsil office here and requested the Tehsildar to sort out his problems. However, the government official reportedly didn’t pay any heed to his repeated requests.
Irked over the issue, Jagadish allegedly poured petrol on him and set himself on fire outside the Tehsil office here at around 1pm yesterday. He was rescued by locals in critical condition and immediately rushed to the District Headquarters Hospital here for treatment.
As his condition deteriorated, he was shifted to Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR), Burla where he succumbed to his burn injuries late last night.
Meanwhile, the victim’s mother lodged a complaint against the Tehsildar and Assistant Tehsildar of Nuapada Tehsil office at Nuapada police station alleging that both the government officials are responsible for her son’s death.
