The deceased, identified as Dusmanta Das, was a resident of Kujanga area in Jagatsinghpur district.
Das allegedly slit his wrist and consumed poison outside the State Assembly this morning over alleged denial of treatment under the Biju Swasthya Kalyan Yojana (BSKY)
However, Das was overpowered by the police personnel present there and rushed to a hospital in the city for treatment. He was later shifted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack as his condition worsened.
Before he was rescued, Das told reporters that he had met with an accident on March 22, 2020 and sustained grievous injuries on his left leg. Later, he was admitted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for treatment.
He underwent a surgery on March 23, 2020 and another operation on June 19, 2020. However, the doctors allegedly discharged him from the hospital on July 15, 2020 owing to the Covid-19 situation.
“Due to the faulty surgeries of doctors at SCB, I have been suffering from unbearable pain. Hence, I visited SCB again where I could not get admission,” he had told reporters.
“I approached several government officials to avail treatment under BSKY but in vain,” he added.
“I had also appealed for euthansia to end my life, which was disallowed,” he had said adding that he had no other option but to end his life on his own.
