Clad in new sarees, women visit temples to pray to the deities seeking a long life for their husbands. Third-gender persons also observe the festival.

Sabitri Brata is a fasting day observed by all Hindu Odia married women on Amavasya, (the last day of the dark fortnight). This day is most favourable for married Hindu women whose husbands are alive. They observe it as a vow with great dedication and pray for their husband to have a long life. Married women in Odisha fast during the day and listen to the story of Savitri and Satyaban.
On Savitri Brata, married women consume fruits the entire day and worship Yamraj, the god of death, seeking long life of their husbands. As per customs, biological parents send fruits, new clothes and other adornments to their married daughters on this occasion.

The women observe the festival amid much serenity and devotion as per a legend is that once Sabitri, a mythological character, had once taken all penance in life and managed to appease the Yamraj, God of Death, to give her husband Satyaban re-life. Satyaban, a prince of a kingdom, was short-lived, according to the legend.
