Hangzhou, Oct 2: VVS Laxman, the coach of Indian men’s team for the upcoming T20 tournament in the ongoing 19th Asian Games, said participating in the multi-sport event is a great opportunity for the entire team and also gives the players huge pride.
Opener Ruturaj Gaikwad will be captaining the Indian team at the Asian Games when they take on Nepal in the quarter-final clash on Tuesday, also marking the first time the men’s cricket team is participating in the multi-sport event.
“Yes, it’s very different. We never ever thought that we will play cricket in China. But is a great opportunity for the entire team because participating in the Asian Games itself is a big opportunity and a matter of great pride for all these players. So, really looking forward to this tournament,” said Laxman in a video posted on bcci.tv, in a chat with reporters.
Other members in the side include Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shivam Dube, Tilak Varma, Ravi Bishnoi, Shahbaz Ahmed, Arshdeep Singh, Mukesh Kumar, Avesh Khan, Rinku Singh, Jitesh Sharma, Prabhsimran Singh, Washington Sundar and Rahul Tripathi.
The matches will be held at the Zhejiang University of Technology Pingfeng Cricket Field in Hangzhou, China, where the Indian women’s team had won the gold medal in initial days of the competition.
“The organisers have made a decent infrastructure and I hope there will be support for us once we start playing the matches. When the women’s team played here, they got a lot of support, realised their potential and won the gold. So, we are also expecting the same when we start playing out games tomorrow,” added Laxman, the NCA head.
Asked about the nature of pitch and the possible playing eleven, Laxman, a legendary mainstay with the bat in the Indian Test side, said, “Unfortunately, we didn’t get to see the wicket as matches have been going on and hopefully, this afternoon, we get to see what wicket we play on. Based on that, we will come up with our strategies."
Laxman signed off by hoping that cricket gets included in the Olympics, something which could become a possibility during 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, and is still under consideration.

New Delhi, Oct 2: Katalin Kariko and Drew Weissman have been jointly awarded the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their discovery of mRNA vax against Covid-19.
They received the honor “for their discoveries concerning nucleoside base modifications that enabled the development of effective mRNA vaccines against Covid-19”, said the Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institutet in a statement.
Their groundbreaking findings have fundamentally changed the understanding of how mRNA interacts with our immune system, the Nobel committee said.
Interest in mRNA technology began to pick up, and in 2010, several companies were working on developing the method.
Vaccines against Zika virus and MERS-CoV were pursued; the latter is closely related to SARS-CoV-2.
After the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic in early 2020, two base-modified mRNA vaccines encoding the SARS-CoV-2 surface protein were developed at record speed.
Protective effects of around 95 per cent were reported, and both vaccines were approved as early as December 2020.
“The Laureates contributed to the unprecedented rate of vaccine development during one of the greatest threats to human health in modern times,” the Committee said.
Kariko was born in 1955 in Szolnok, Hungary. She received her PhD from Szeged’s University in 1982 and performed postdoctoral research at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Szeged until 1985.
In 1989, she was appointed Assistant Professor at the University of Pennsylvania, where she remained until 2013. After that, she became vice president and later senior vice president at BioNTech RNA Pharmaceuticals.
Since 2021, she has been a Professor at Szeged University and an Adjunct Professor at Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.
Weissman was born in 1959 in Lexington, Massachusetts. He received his MD, PhD degrees from Boston University in 1987.
He did his clinical training at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center at Harvard Medical School and postdoctoral research at the National Institutes of Health.

Mumbai, Oct 2: On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, popular TV actor Mohammed Iqbal Khan claimed himself to be a huge fan of the philosophy of Gandhi that is now developed gradually over decades by the experiences, experiments and vision of Gandhi.
The actor said: "I'm a huge fan of Gandhian philosophy. It could be understood as a collection of social, religious and political ideas formulated and developed by Mahatma Gandhi himself, from 1893 to 1914 while in South Africa and later during the Indian freedom struggle."
Iqbal known for featuring in shows like 'Crackdown', 'Kaisa Ye Pyar Hai' among others mentioned that he follows the idea of truth and non-violence that Gandhi once taught the nation.
The actor said: "Truth and non-violence are the two basic foundation blocks of Gandhian philosophy. The term 'truth and non-violence' is derived from Sanskrit 'Satya aur Ahimsa'. Gandhi would have opined, has broader meaning than mere 'truth'.”
“Gandhi’s version of Satya meant being true to yourself and also to the world. He professed that one shouldn’t only speak truth but also be true in his/her deeds and conduct."
'Na Umra Ki Seema Ho' actor continued: "Coming to non-violence or ahimsa, Gandhi saw ahimsa not only as absence of violence but also as something which entails love. He had said that if the oneness of life is a truth then committing violence on someone else is also an act of violence onto oneself and is thus self destructive."

The actor concluded saying: "In my day to day life I believe in doing the right and leaving the rest to God and to stand for my rights but in a graceful way. There is still a lot to learn from his philosophy."
