Bhubaneswar, Apr 15: The potato prices are burning a hole in the pockets of the consumers with the prices soaring by Rs 10 in the span of just a week in Odisha.

The skyrocketing prices of this mandatory vegetable has become a major concern for the households.

The production of the tuber is unable to suffice the demand of the consumers in Odisha. To meet the demands, potato is imported from West Bengal and Maharashtra.

"The imports from West Bengal are failing to meet the consumers demands which is why the prices have hit the sky", rued the Cuttack Chatrabazar vendors.

The tuber is produced in Patangi and Nandapur in Koraput district. However, due to the lack of cold storage facilities, post production, the conservation of the tuber is a problem.

The farmers are able to sell very less quantity of potato in the harvest season. Due to the lack of cold storage a majority of the crops gets wasted which is why we have to import from other states in the off-season.

This puts a pressure on the kitchen budget of the consumers.

The BJD party in its 2019 election manifesto had promised to build a cold storage in every block and grain storage in every Gram Panchayat. With the vegetable prices soaring high it is an indication of how far the promises have been worked upon.
