Bhubaneswar, Sept 10: Speaker Surma Padhi Tuesday directed Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water Minister Rabi Naik to ensure the supply of non-contaminated water in Puri and other parts of the State.
A discussion on the issue was held in the State Assembly today.
Raising a question, Satyabadi MLA Omm Prakash Mishra expressed unhappiness saying that people in various parts of Puri district are suffering from deadly cancer and skin diseases because of consumption of contaminated water.
The MLA said 126 villages in Kanas and Delanga blocks, 14 villages in Brahmagiri area and many villages in Krushnaprasad and Satyabadi blocks have been consuming polluted water. Though there are five drinking water projects on the Daya River, people are not getting water in summer. The Daya River is drying up after November, said Mishra.
Drinking Water Minister Rabi Naik said efforts are being made to construct check dams to conserve water for people's use in non-monsoon season.
