Nor'wester Impacts Normal Life In Odisha; 3 Cows Killed, Traffic Hit, Power Supply Disrupted

Bhubaneswar, Mar 20: Normal human life was hit, some pet animals were killed and crops were damaged as Nor'wester-related rains, lightning and wind blow continued to happen across Odisha.  

Information on the Kalabaisakhi impact continues to pour in from different parts of the State. 

Thunderstorms and rains continued to happen at different places across the Puri district for the last two days. While people preferred to remain inside their houses most of the daytime due to chilly weather, vegetables, cereal and paddy plants have been damaged due to continued wind blow in the district.  

Cultivation of black gram, mung and horse gram has been affected in Satyabadi and Kanas areas in the Puri district. Paddy cultivation has been damaged in Brahmagiri, Nimapada, Pipili and Puri areas. Farmers have demanded that they should be compensated for the loss of their cultivation. 

Power supply has been disrupted due to incessant rains and wind blow in the Loisingha area in Bolangir district. While people have faced difficulties due to disruption in electricity supply, no loss of life or wealth has been reported. 

In Sundargarh, people have also faced difficulties due to disruption in power supply caused by Nor'wester. Koida, Lahunipada, and Gurundia areas have been affected. Inundation caused by continued rains has also disrupted normal life in parts of the Sundargarh district. 

As many as three heads of cows were killed and another animal was severely injured as lightning struck them at Randiba Laxmipur village in the R Udayagir area of Gajapati district. The cattle were grazing on the field when the lightning struck them. 

Normal life has come to a standstill position in the Banki NAC due to inundation. Water has stood to knee-height on the roads in the NAC due to incessant rains due to which vehicular movement has been disrupted since last night.  

According to the India Meteorological Department, more than 50 places recorded more than 40 MM rainfall during the last 24 hours. Dhenkanal recorded the highest of 72.2 MM Rainfall.
