Cuttack/Phulbani, Nov 18: The death toll in the alleged mango kernel food-poisoning incident in Odisha’s Kandhamal district rose to three on Monday after another woman succumbed while undergoing treatment at the SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack.
The deceased has been identified as Jeeta Majhi (40), a resident of Mandipanka village under Daringbadi block in Kandhamal district.
On October 30, as many as eight women from Mandipanka village fell seriously ill after consuming mango kernel gruel. They were taken to Bramhanigaon hospital the following day with symptoms like vomiting and abdominal pain.
Two of the women, Runu Majhi (25) and Ramita Majhi (28), died on Nov 1 after being referred to MKCG Medical College. Of the remaining six, three have recovered following treatment, while two women including Jeeta Majhi were admitted to SCB MedicalCollege in Cuttack.
Currently, Tuni Majhi is undergoing treatment at the SCB Hospital.
On the basis of primary inquiry, the State government earlier clarified that food poisoning was the actual cause behind the unfortunate deaths.
