Puri, Sep 9: The deep depression over the Bay of Bengal crossed the Odisha coast close to Puri on Monday, informed the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).

According to the IMD’s Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre, "The depression over the Bay of Bengal made a landfall between 10.30 AM and 11.30 AM with wind speeds between 55 km/hour and 65 km/hour."

The IMD predicted the system will maintain its deep depression intensity until the evening, then gradually weaken into a depression by midnight on September 9. Afterward, it is expected to move west-northwestwards across Chhattisgarh over the next 24 hours.

Under its influence, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur in many places in Odisha during next three days, according the IMD’s latest bulletin.

The Bhubaneswar Met Centre issued a 'red alert' for Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Ganjam, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Khordha, Puri, Balangir and Boudh districts and ‘orange warning’ for the districts of Cuttack, Angul, Dhenkanal, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada, Sonepur, Bargarh, Nuapada, Kalahandi, Rayagada, Sambalpur and Gajapati during the next 24 hours.

A yellow warning of heavy rain has been issued for Bhadarak, Balasore, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Jajpur, Deogarh, Jharsuguda, and Sundergarh districts during the period.

The IMD also forecast rain in most parts of the state for Tuesday and Wednesday.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea until September 11, the IMD said.

Meanwhile, reports of flash floods were received from Malkangiri and Koraput districts. While a huge area in Malkangiri has been inundated, rainwater was flowing above four feet at places at several places on NH-326, weathermen said.
